pressure vs accuracy

i was shooting this weekend and noticed if the pressure was lower around 2000 psi that my gun was slightly more accurate. even thought i was shooting the same fps at higher pressure. i was wondering if the higher pressures can deform the skirt of the pellet where the longer push of low pressure helps the pellet. because at least with paintball high volume low pressure is better. i have not seen much about this topic and though you guys would know.

Well heres my take on it.

Your hammer opens your valve and releases a charge of air from a 3000psi source, and you achieve (for example) 900fps.

The more you shoot, your bottle pressure lessens. If your velocity doesnt change much, thats sort-of easy to explain.

As the bottle pressure lessens, your hammer is able to open the valve a little bit more releasing more air, enough to retain but most often increase the (again for example) 900fps velocity.

Eventually your bottle pressure will drop to the point you cannot supply the needed amount of air to retain your desired velocity.

Having said all that, why you are seeing better accuracy at lower pressures? In a word, consistency.

Your gun will tell you when it is more consistently charging the barrel, tossing your pellet downrange, when its accuracy improves.

I would bet if you shot across a chrony, when your accuracy starts to improve you would notice the velocity deviation decreases. Then after a number of shots, you will start to see accuracy start to go away again.

You have to make a decision now. Can I live with slightly worse accuracy at a higher fill pressure, and get more shots per fill? Example: shooting from 3000psi fill down to your refill pressure.

Or do I want maximum accuracy and lose a few shots per fill? Such as filling to 2500psi (or whatever your gun likes) down to your refill pressure.

Or… head scratcing time… do I want to mess with the valve/preload/hammer weight and really delve into this mystery?

Can not answer your question . But I have my .177 condor set at 1000 fps at 2200 psi fill with cph 10.5 pellets and have no problems with accuracy out to 65 yards which is the limit of my range right now . Marvin
