Q:

Scope suggestion..

I’m going to have to change scopes..the one I’m using now is so big I had to build a riser for it, when I did that my close up shots are screwed..On my daily pigeon slaughter trip I have about 4 stops, the furthest shot is 55 yards almost straight up, the closest shot..well about 12 feet..my zero is 30 yards, at 12 feet (inside a carwash I have to aim 3-4 inches over to hit the bird, at 55 yards..well I havent quited figured out what to do there..haha..I’m guessing if I get a smaller scope, remove the riser, and clamp it right onto the AF rail my gun will shoot flatter..?? what do you think? What scope would fit the bill?

Yep Machinist. That’s it exactly! πŸ˜‰

Some times it is help full to look at things in the extreme to understand how they work. Say you shot at a target exactly over head. Or 200 yards directly below you under a bridge for instance. What would happen with your shot if raised the muzzle of your gun up the same distance you would have if shooting across the field at 200 yards? You would miss by a mile! πŸ˜€ But of course you wouldn’t raise the muzzle at all. You would want the muzzle pointed exactly at the target.

What do they call that thing? A isosceles triangle? πŸ˜•

(Never could spell it.) You want to sight for the distance of the Muzzle to the base under the target. Not the line drawn to the elevated target. πŸ˜‰

i have one of the bowhunters range finders and it calculates the distance and angles in and i realized why i always hit so high when shooting from an elevated spot because it says that make a line strait up from where the animal it say a tree is by the animal that is the actual range pretty much what knife maker said
it took me a while to grasp the concept but now my shooting is much better up and down hills

Actually the very top of our courthouse is 57 yards from street level..about 20 yards from my fav. parking spot to the edge of the building..so..you are saying a 20 yard sight in will hit a 57 yard tall target? this is something I have often wondered but have never seen in print…thanks!

I can’t see why you need such a high riser. I’m using a 50mm objective and it has a HUGE amount of clearance!

Scope center to bbl center is as stated above 3″. + what ever your riser is. With a 30MM tube, It will be a bit more.

Now. When shooting at even 50 ft or yard, either straight up or down, you aim for the horizontal distance.

Let’s say that you are shooting at a tree rat that is 55 yards up on a pole, but you are standing 10 yards from the base of the pole. You Aim for 10 yards. Not 55 yards. Same for all up hill and down shots.
At 5 yards from the base I would aim apx. 2 1/2″ to 3″ high. Not for the distance, as there isn’t any. This would take up the difference between centerline of the scope and my Bbl. In your case, with the riser, I would have to aim another 1/2″ higher.

This is something Archers really have to pay attention to, especially when hunting from a tree stand. Not to mention the arrow shaft being at least 5″ below the line of sight through the sights them selves.

It is simply something Archers and to a lesser extent air gunners have to learn to be successfully hunters. It all so applies to long shooting with powder burners. It is one of the things Snipers must learn! πŸ˜‰

A laser will indeed scare the shit out of birds. Wildlife damage control agents use them in grocery stores to drive birds into nets for capture in places where they cannot shoot them.

I bought a laser but could never get it zeroed, πŸ‘Ώ then someone on here told me a laser would make them go nuts and fly off..thanks!

Hey Machinist…..Try the lazer …you’ll love it..

I got myself one of those cheap ones from dealextreme.com

I have set it to 10 yards……..
Just a little preparation you need to do with the elevation and windage screws.
They are not precise when you try to adjust it….But once you get the knack..
it’ll get to the right spot (patience ….)
After that just apply some locklite and forget about it.

I have mine mounted on my talon for more than 7 months and that thing never moved its POA

The best part is you dont even have to rise your gun to your sholder…
Just give it some waist support and Bang at 10 yards….

If you wanna shoot 5 yards then just point the dot and roughly estimate one inch low on the target…..Same goes for 15 yards one inch high on the target…
You’ll love it πŸ™‚

I have fired more than 1000 pellets into my indoor pellet trap aimed with the lazer and believe me it still is darn accurate.

And as you said about the talon you can never get a flatter trajectory.
Reasons :
> With a ordinary mount on your talon the Centre-to-Centre of the Barrel and Scope will be 3 β€œ
> Eg: If you put you data into any of the charts. 925 fps / 3 inch scope height / 14.3 grain pellets and zeroed at 20 yards . You will see the arc.

In your case the height is more than 3” so the arc bends more……..

Last point if you get the scope lower than what you have, then your cheek rest, shoulder support and eye piece of the scope are no more in sync.

Well…I took a fixed 4 power tasco off my springer and mounted it right to the af rail.. well it dont work so good..first off I could barely get my cheek down enough to see through the scope, finally I zeroed it at 10 yards..my next shots were at 30 yards shooting meisterklugens 925fps pw on 8….about 4 1/2 to 5 inches high πŸ˜₯ I dont think you cant make these guns shoot flat…this is actually worse than when I have the riser and the big scope on.. 😯

Lower scope position will decrease the needed holdover on close shots, that’s right.
you could also use a laser for these close shots.

and it helps to know the trajectory of yor pellet,
chairgun does a pretty decent job on that
