Made an aluminum breech

My breech O-rings were worn so instead of just replacing them I decided to make a new breech lol. I machined this one out of 6061 instead of the factory delrin and made the tolerances tighter so it doesn’t flop around. I also grooved it for 3/32″ o-rings instead of the original 1/16″. I cut the grooves to the tolerances listed in the machinery’s handbook but I think I need to go back and loosen them up a bit as the cocking effort is a little bit too high right now but it won’t be a problem to fix. Looks cooler and no more wasted air out the breech.

I had a member ask me if I could make him a breech out of bronze, has anyone tried that? I’m thinking the breech will be so heavy it will absorb a lot of the hammers impact rather than transfer it to the t-hat. This aluminum one “feels” about the same as the delrin but I don’t have a gram scale.

But it wouldn’t shine and attract curious animals.

Make one out of aluminium with say a 16mm bore and pressfit a PTFE piece in it then proceed as normal. Can’t get any better friction coefficient than PTFE to steel. Well maybe with exotic coatings or such!

Thanks. I have some bearing bronze in the shop I could make one out of but it’s going to be heavy. Maybe I’ll try it out for the heck of it and see how it works.

i’ve done a number of finishes on firearms and the shroud for my talon with the gunkote finish from brownell. it works great.

I wouldn/t use g10 for a breech. It’s glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin. Wich means it’s plastic with sandpaper in it!

Might be super for load bearing non sliding parts or knife handles but it will be killer for your barrel let alone your tooling!

What if they were coated with NP3 just asking here but that stuff is very slippery all the time without even applying lubrication to it. Check this link out and read about it.

I don’t have any experience with that stuff but $20 a foot is not a deal killer. That is about the same or slightly cheaper than this Aluminum I am experimenting with.

He said it had superior properties to the delrin? breech in many ways, and a much higher mechanical strength to resist the dreaded knob strippage, and should not affect the breech weight as much as the aluminum. Oh technology. Thought it might be worth investigating, even at $20 a ft, youd get maybe breech per ft.?

It is a linen laminate cost about $20 /foot and is like a micarta. Does not come in black though. Comes in green

I think it would make cocking the gun a little awkward. I dont really want to mill a slot on both sides either.

I think a custom gun posted here once had 2 knobs like you describe, I cant remember who posted about it though. They had to cock by putting the muzzle on the ground and pushing both knobs down, kinda like cocking a crossbow.

Looks great, would be interested in one if you get good results.
