Yes, Mike, all you say is true….except the part where you say I say otherwise? If you look, I’m sure I’ve said at least once, ‘this is how firearms are classified, should not be a problem with airguns’. It would, in the case of some local place that regulated say fpe or mv relative to being a pistol or rifle as the Brits and Canadians and many others do of course. Who understands all the BS in places like NJ?
You’ll note, I hope, I was responding to ‘attach a stock a pistol, and it’s a legal rifle by BATF’. Such is not true. Right?
Yes, you can have as long a barrel on a handgun as you want, or as short. On a rifle it must be at least 16 inches (and 26 OAL), and I’m sure I said as much (or should have).
From a practical standpoing, once a rifle, always a rifle, you can’t cut the barrel to less than 16 inches or the OAL to less than 26. Once your AR is a rifle, taking the stock off and putting the pistol buffer on is a bust unless you have a long enough barrel so the OAL is OK. Making a Remington XP-100 by rebarreling your rifle action and putting the factory stock on it is a bust.
Likewise, a stock on a pistol is illegal unless the pistol has a long barrel before and is carefully registered. Remember, there’s a rule about not building a firearm you couldn’t otherwise own. As I understand it this includes even if you basically scrap a legal pistol in the process, the issue is the new rifle just made.
Again, airguns are different (usually). It’s OK to put the shoulder stock on your 2240, but not on your 1911 or m9.
And yes, I trust you. I’m just not sure you’re folowing what I’m saying, which probably means I’m not being clear enough.

P.S., These laws apply to Fire Arms as out lined by BATF. Not Air Guns. As far as Federal Laws are concerned, you can alter Air Guns, Including, Pistol or Rifle just about any way you want. Your local or State laws may be different. But that brings on other issues.
😉
Mike
As per BATF.

NO absolutely not!!! If it was a pistol, it’s now a SBR which is a big time bust if not registered:
For airguns this is probalby not a big deal, but for powder burners it’s a matter of BIG problems if you’re not careful. Once it’s registered as a rifle (or pistol) changing it to the other catigory is not trivial…..
Again, rifles have 16 inch barrels (at least) and are 26 inches OAL. There’s a little loophole for rifles receivers that have never been built (say an AR15), they can be made into legal pistols under the right conditions, but once built up as a rifle, it’s a bust.
Or so it was all ‘splained to me…..
Caution advised.

No “D” It isn’t. In a legal Fire Arm you can have as long a bbl. as you want. It is only when the the fire arm was or is orginally manufactured as a Rifle or Shot gun (sholder stock from factory and serrial numbered as such that cutting thestock off becomes an illegal aact. Adding a long bbl to a pistol or hand gun is NOT an illegal act as per ATF, nor does it make it a long gun, or rifle. The Super 14 by Thompson Contender, or a Colt Bunt Lone Special are examples. They are not illegal until a shoulder stock is either permanently attached or provisions are made of a mechanical nature to allow them to have a shoulder attached either permanently or temporarily.
Simply adding a longer Bbl. does not make it a rifle, which by definition is a shoulder fired weapon.
However the opposite is true of a Long gun. or rifle-shotgun. If you cut the bbl. shorter beyond the legal limit, it does indeed become an illegal weapon. However. It it wouldn’t be classified as a hand gun. But rather an illegally shortened rifle or shot gun. Regardless of whether or not you cut the shoulder stock off to leave only a hand grip or not. It is the act of cutting the bbl. too short that is the crime along with possession.
Trust me on this one. A lot of my business is governed by these BATF laws. Shelp knows them well as also.
Mike
its not a fire arm
i was just currious what you all would call it if it was in ur possesion
it has stock grips and an 18 inch barrel
I’d call it a pistol. It would be one as a firearm, and the non NFA definition of a rilfe (like might happen in hunting regulations) includes language like ‘designed to be fired from the shoulder’.
IMO it’s a long barreled handgun. And no doubt lotsa fun to shot.

If the question is how firearm rules work (I assume it is?), you have a pistol (with along barrel). It has to have over 16 inches of barrel and be at least 26 inches OAL to be a rifle in the normal sense. Otherwise it’s a SBR (short barrel rifle) and has to be registered like a sawed off shotgun, sliencer, machine gun or that stuff. IMO you want the pistol (not that it matters unless there’s a power limit issue on handguns in play).
Doug Owen
no stock on it just regular grips
yellow he said 10 inchs not 1.0 inches
Well for me what Walter said matches what rob said exactly !
Yea but for me it would be a 2.50 cal.
Knife is right. Remove the stock and it’s a hand gun.
If it has a solidly attached shoulder stock, It is a rifle. If not, a hand gun.
As per BATF.

Seeing as how you mention FT the limit is 12″ barrel for that sport
Always been what I consider a pistol max and usually favor 10″ barrels on pistols.
um shorter than my leg shorter than my arm and WWWAAAAYYYYY shorter than my dick
lol
well i call it a pistol
and im stickin to it lol
will an 18 inchr be legal in FT?
Use your body as a guide.
If the gun is as long as your leg, it’s a rifle.
If it’s as long as your arm, it’s a carbine.
If it’s as long as your dick, it’s a pistol.

in context of pistol field target……. IIRC the max barrel would be 12″ and max O/L of 15″
