No slop scope
Im looking for recomendations on a scope preferably max $400.
that doesnt have scope slop, IE: if you move the turrent 5 MOA and move it back to 2 MOA it will be exactly where it should be.
thats the most important thing to me .
secondly would be target turrents,
third would be power and 30 MM tube
Leapers scope have all the goodies I like but it doesnt do me any good if the POI shifts when you return it to zero.

For me, the Bushies are just about as good as you can get for the money. And far better than just abut any scope in price range. And some ever more expensive.
Well, unless something has changed drastically, you can wild hog and deer hunt in Germany in the moon light. Which is exactly why the German Scopes preform so much better in the dark. Better glass. Better coatings, and cross hairs that you can SEE! (Ever try to see a Black Hog at night, much less the cross hair on one? You can with the proper German Glass!) When the light goes bad, nothing beats top German Optics! It’s a moot point which is better. Swarofski-S&B-Khales-Zeiss. They are all good. Hell, they are all GREAT! I hear Leica is coming out with a Scope. Now that should be a top performer!
When you can see the individual hairs on a Boars side in nothing but star light at 100 yards and the ret. clearly on the shoulder, you have a good scope. When in the same light you can hardly see to walk, but can still see the Boar. You have a great Scope. So yes, the top scopes do gather and magnify the light.

not sure EU hunters allways have been allowed nighthunting….maybe im too young to remember, but it has not been allowed in most EU countries in the last 20 years
anyhow….for 400 bucks….i can highly recommend a bushnell Elite 4200 6-24×40
it has 1″ tube, 40mm objective, yet is brighter than any leapers, cheap tasco, rex, zos and what other names those Chinese scopes hide under….even the 56mm objectives, with 30mm tubes.
mine has milldots which i like….turrets are repeatable…..2 up =two down to reset….not that i use my turrets like that….i prefer to set them and use the milldots instead
downside to the 4200 imho is the copper colered reticle….it is black if no backlight comes in the scope from the eyepiece….but if your shooting with strong sun/light comming in through the eye piece the reticle turns copper colored….and that matches nicely with a bruce/pine forest, so for a quick shot you might loose the reticle for a second as it camouflages against the tree trunks….second thing is this scope is quite long !
as a second much cheaper option is the Bushnell Legend 5-15×40…..its not as smooth as the 4200, but the glass is very good(91% vs 94% light comes through), the turrets not quite as good but close….but its half the price typical you can find it for 160 bucks shipped…where the 4200 is gonna run you about 380+
i use both scopes allmost daily….my legend sits on my A410, and the 4200 on my rapid….biggest difference is with the 4200’s 24x zoom you can see into a squirrels soul out to 50 yards….but both scopes get the job done…
one last thing….the 4200 has rainguard….i have used both scopes in snowy/sleet weather, and here the 4200 definatly wins with its coating….the legend aint bad…but it did start to fog up on the outside as moistured gathered on the objective….it will happen to allmost any scope at some point….some earlier than others, but its worth keeping in mind…regular winter days with frost is no problem…just those days where its near freezing….
Most think the 30 mm tube will give more light gathering. But if you understand how optics work you will quickly see that it cant.
Some companies advertise that it does. Pure gimmick from them.
30MM and = have a real purpose in the Sniping and long range world.
!. They are the standard size in European Optics. Just like our is 1 inch. That’s how it came to be.
2. The tube, by virtue of being larger in diameter, can easily support a larger diameter objective lens due to their increased strength. That is how you get more light gathering. (Not Tube Diameter). Larger Objective, and Larger Ocular lens to take advantage of it.
European hunters have always been allowed to hunt at night. So they developed Scopes and reticles that can preform brilliantly in low light.
3. But the biggest advantage other than the much higher strength of the tube and mounts, is the larger tube gives more room for the erector tube to move in the main tube it’s self. In other words, it will have much more vertical adjustment. This is of huge importance in long range shooting. The more vertical adjustment you have, the further out you can set up your scope for accurate fire. Say 1600 meters rather than 800 or 1000 on a Barrett for instance. A lot of scopes require drop mounts where the ring mounts have a 20 or 30 degree angle in them to compensate for the lack of adjustment. Leupold use to really put down the 30 mm tube scopes in their advertising. That was until they really started to go for military contracts. Turns out LP didn’t know as much as they thought they did. Oddly enough,LP now makes 300MM tube scopes with huge ocular lens too. 😉
And after all those years of making fun of those over priced, over sized European Scopes. Now they claim to be in the same market. HaaHaa!!!
Millett has joined the ranks, but some how missed the point entirely. They use large lens, but milk out at med. high mag.. but worse, only have 74-75″ of vertical adjustment. Yet they have a 30mm tube. Comm’on Millet. Get your head out of your ass. You have missed the very reason of going to the 30mm in the first place.

I have the 4-16 x 50 AF scope. I just ordered a new scope because I am not a fan of it.
Mine doesnt have mildots though. Not sure why if they are supposed to.
No I wasnt aware that there is a purpose for the 30 mm.
I assumed it was better sight picture , better light gathering .
Your saying you dont like the AF scope. Is it the glass or the turrents or both??
I didnt like the turrents so much on the Bushnells,I like the MTC viper , but it aint cheap.
But I suppose the primary importance , even above the glass , is the repeatable clicks. and thats what Im most concerned with.
Thanks
In the 400. range you list, the 3200 and 4200 bushy’s are great scopes. You list a 30 mm tube. Are you aware of the purpose of a 30 mm tube in in a scope? Most don’t. This in not a put down. But most shooters really don’t know. It just looks good to them.
The Air Force scoope of waht it’s worth is a POS. Stay away. Far away! It’s a great 25.00 scopoe for a lot more. 😉
Mike
Does the turrents on the 4 x 16 airforce scope slip???
In other words does it stay zeroed after moveing the turrent then moveing back to zero ?
Thanks

I see they have the 4200 Elite in a side focus now. I have been wanting to upgrade to Leupold EFR’s for all of my rifles … that side focus 4200 is tempting.
How do they perform at full power ? I am trying to get at least 20x on my next scope purchase and that 24x Elite is looking better and better.
I also saw the new 30mm Bushnell 6500 in a 30x ! Reviews were great if I can believe what they were reporting .. only 50 bucks less than the Leupold though.
