Q:

Hello with typical newbie problem

Hiya, I’m Mark from South Wales in the UK.

I have finally bought a Stealth, a .177 example, and am having some consistency problems.

Today in a dozen shots with JSB exacts the fps was varying from 777 to 823 (kind of illegal here in the UK without Firearms Certificate)

I have already ordered a new hybrid hammer and spring from Leupy’s Custom Shop and I hope that will sort it out, but is there anything else I should be checking/adjusting?

Today I tried a tin of the JSB Exacts 4.53 headsize.

I didn’t chrono it again but at the club I was knocking over re-settable targets (40mm kill zones) out to 52 yards without any bother.

Was particularly pleased as I was using holdover with a Hawke Airmax SR6 3-12×44 scope at 7x magnification.

To put this in perspective I am normally a Field Target shooter and I use the 10-50×60 “Big BSA” on my Pro-Target @ 50x magnification.

I am fuffed to chuck with this little gun and I am sure it will be even better once Leupy’s hammer and spring are fitted in place of the originals. 😆

Welcome.

I shot my Talon SS for nearly a year with a .177 barrel. Crosman Premier Heavies were consistently better than anything else I tried in that barrel so I stuck with them. I had ordered some .177 JSB’s to try just before starting to think about trying .22. Because of a backorder the .22 barrel got here first (it loves 18.1g .22 JSB’s by the way).

Recently, I ended up with an 18inch ..177 barrel and thought I’d give it a try. Shot the CPH’s great, .25 inch groups (CTC) at 20yrds. I unwrapped those .177 JSB’s and after a half a tin and after cleaning, trying different fill pressures, and lightly lubing some pellets after a mild cleaning, my best group is barely under an inch.

These are 5 shots groups, I’ll put 2, 3, 4 in the same hole – with the rest randomly spaced around the bull.

I’m just sayin’ try another pellet before going crazy.
Diff barrels like diff pellets. These are lose in mine.

Most guns I have had seem to like the 8.4 grain JSBs . The one shot way over the UK legal limit could have been a lighter pellet as I don’t weigh them, but then it is a long way over, 805fps being the legal limit with this pellet weight.

It actually averaged 790fps, which is fine, it is the huge variation which was bothering me more. If it is consistent then I can tune to stay within the law once I have the new hammer and spring.

edit: Missed the last post when I was typing, thanks for the link, will check it out.

Perhaps heavier pellets to slow the FPS? But then you’ve got the FPE issue to contend with. 😕

There’s some righteous and honorable Brit friends on here that’ll be more help than I am… Those UK gun laws blow me away when I think about them.
