Chronographs
I have a question about chronys that came from a friend who is looking to start reloading for his ar15. He is going to let me use his reloader for my blaser so I’m being nice and helping a lot. 🙂
Anyway, he’s looking for a chronograph. He was looking at one like most everyone here has for under 100 bucks, and he saw some that cost many times more.
The question is, what’s the difference? And which one would you recommend?

I have experience with a ProChrono unit and the Chrony Gamma. The ProChrono is a good bit of gear and works fine. It is has plenty of features and I would recommend it. The Gamma has lots of features as well and has had no problems. One nice thing about the Gamma is that with the remote display I can prtect it when using it to get terminal velocity at the target. I can set up the unit under the target and then put a couple 4x4s in front of it to keep from destroying it with a wild big bore shot. The remote (on a phone line) display can be set to the side to read through the scope. I usually hook up the printer when doing the measurements at range as well.
Mr-Lama, I have The Shooting Chrony Master Beta Model . It has a 60 Shot memory, LCD Display can be put on bench next to you useing supplied cable. Runs on 9v Battery. I use a small tripod to mount the LCD display next to me while I shoot. Photos of my Chrony are at my Bucket site {unclebobss177} Feel free to take a look see.
I just used it to test My Daisy SG22 . Max was 512fps Min. was about 460-480fps.
The GAMMA Models have a higher shot count.

I have an Oehler, but it’s an old model. They invented chronographs and the military will use only Oehlers. But the technology has gotten way better since my model was made. You guys with the cheap chronies probably get better readings than me. Although I’ve upgraded to the newest sensors, I still get false readings every now and then.

A real bright reg bulb probly be ok. i didnt have any but i had halogen.
Why no standard light bulbs?
I have the chrony alfa and it is tested 1st around 3100fps and it is cheap.
I have the Alpha Master with lights. Choose it for the remote display, ease of use. Any time it gave me an error was due to poor lighting. Put a brick in front of the body, then you only have to worry about rods & diffusers.
I have the Shooting Chrony Beta works fine with proper lighting. Bit hard to learn to save and navigate the data.
I have shot airguns, firearms, arrows, thrown baseballs, sticks, everything i could think of over my ProChrony, it works without flaw. Proper lighting is key to making it work good though. I have no experience with chrony’s other than mine. I’m interested to hear what pops up on this topic.
i bought the shooting chrony Beta, has more features than i will use,bought it because the controller has cord to take back to shooting bench. do not have to go in front of fireing line to fool with the chrony.
The lighting thru me a curve when i first bought mine. incandescent light only. Good halogen light.no fluorescent or standard light bulbs
