Strange pumping up regulated tank

Ok, we were pumping up a new tank my roomate got for his drozd. It’s a paintball hpa tank with a regulator made by some guy that makes them for the drozd.

First off, was he supposed to pump this thing up with a hand pump?

So he was pumping it up and the needle got to 1400psi (that’s what the regulator is set at) and it stayed there for a while. He pumped some more, and all of a sudden it jumped way up to nearly 3000psi, and a then a bunch of air came out of somewhere. Possibly through something on the valve, possibly between the tank and pump adaptor. When we put it in the pump again and started pumping it up, every pump moved it nearly 500psi and I don’t think it was going to stop at 3000, we got there and it was still rising, but we didn’t want to go any higher at risk of something exploding. I couldn’t tell if this was measuring the regulator/tank or the whole thing wasn’t letting air in anymore and it was just filling up the hose.

So what did he mess up? Is this some wierd normal part of a regulated tank, or did he blow a burst disk? Or did something in the valve come apart for this to happen?

How do these regulators work, and how does it normally look when pumping it up?

There are two things I’m thinking are burst disk, one says 3k and one says 5k. Neither look any different than before.

gauge is for tank pressure so you know when to fill it.
5k is 5,000psi burst for the tank and 3k is downstream protection for whatever is connected to the regulator.
That 3k disk is a bit excessive as 2k would afford better protection.

Always look at a fitting as you unscrew it to be sure things are coming apart where they should. Very scary thought.

But why can’t we pump it up anymore???

whatever the gauge on the reg says is what is in the tank

try to use it see how many shots he gets

if you blew a burst disk you would not be able to put anymore air in the bottle.

with the psi jumping so much i would empty the bottle and strip the reg and check for any thing that should not be in there.

what psi are your burst disks? it seams very odd what is happening here.
