Q:

Top Hat adjustment q’s

I received my Chrony beta and decided to play with my tophat adjustment. I have a stock talon SS with a new 18 inch barrel, and at a PW setting of 4, I started at .071 and worked my way up to .118 with a full 3000 psi tank. I took three shots with each setting and got the best results at .113.

This seems a little high to adjust the tophat out?.

I was using JSP Exact 15.8’s

Also, I was getting inconsistant variability in readings:

.071 425.5, 477.9, 479.2, 496.1
.078 491.8, 545.3, 471.1
.088 488.5, 515.6, 513.4
.097 524, 533, 557, 563
.103 515.2, 585.5, 578.2, 606.9, 604.7
.108 542.1, 620, 630, 628.3
.113 553.6, 615.3, 622.9, 611.1, 643.4, 620.3, 646.3
.118 559.8, 607.6, 623.7, 606.2

Notice the variability from the first shot at the setting to the remaining ones. I seemed to get the highest velocity from a setting of .113 at 646.3.

What can I do to continue to optimize this?

The measurements above were taken from one tank starting at 3000 psi.

dwalk is this a maximum setting for the talon , for fps on the 15 grain pellets.

with the PS on 4 you’re bound to get some low numbers…. 🙄

i have the standard Talon in .22 with the 18″ tube and i have my TH set on 0.083″, PW=10.5, PS=7 for an average of 909 fps from 14 gr Beeman round nose. i’m still working with it, too.

at the moment i run it at 2900 psi and don’t let it get below 2000 psi. it’s good for at least 30 full powered shots that way, i’ve learned.

suggestion: dial your PW UP one half at a time (from 10.0 to 10.5, as an example.)

the AF rifles are amazing at how well they perform and how accurate they can be… 🙂

keep on trying…it’s there…u just gotta find it… 🙂

When I adjust the tophat (TH) I typically exclude the first two or three shots. Same with the power wheeel (PW), the first shot is to sort things out and the second is considered suspect.

I would run a few more pellets through at each setting. Like 10-20 shots to get a feel for what the rifle is doing… I run about 10 shot through before I adjust the PW just to see how the rifle is working.

I would also suggest a TH setting of 0.85 (at least) to start and a PW setting at 75% of the total scale or close to maximum. Your pushing 22 caliber pellets with a small Talon valve hole. Your going to have to have the Talon dialed up a bit to reach 1000 fps…

If you want to keep some PW for adjustment, don’t go past 90% of the scale to get the velocity you want. If you see the fps your after and the PW is at max, back off to 75% and add some gap to the TH.

Watch those set screws, too loose and the TH moves… Too tight and the valve stem gets janked… 😉

I have one tank that shoots a really nice string and another that has a bit of the jumps at the start but levels out once the pressure decreases… At the same TH setting they do two COMPLETELY different velocities… TH measurement is 100% relative to your TH only, measuring the max or min is totally up to you.

Oh, and have fun! 😉

those number do seem quite inconsistent to me.
I would reduce fill preasure to say 2700, and start with a much smaller gap on the top hat, and increase that gap till i get the velocity i want, or till velocity doesnt increase any more.
Thats sort of what i did with mine, and i love the results, filled at only 2650psi, i get 30 shots at 40FPE avg. (kodiaks at about 930fps), with an extreme spread of less than 50fps from shot 1 to shot 30. I have a 24″ barrel, so your numbers (overall velocity and energy) might be a little lower, but shot count and consistency should be about the same i think.
hope this helps.

What I noticed when adjusting the top hat was it depended on where you take your measurements from. Gaps will be larger or smaller depending where you measure from (What side (s) of the valve). I just picked the spot with the smallest gap and used that as a reference.

Also, I looked at your numbers (FPS) and at first glance they appear to be a bit low? I am not an expert (yet)… so let me think about this over night…

i dont have a talon , i have a condor, but did you shoot some shot strings before adjustment to see where you were on the velocity.

also disregard the first shot after filling the tank,it will always be off.
