I use the crown cutters with the brass guide and cut the crown by hand turning, nice and slowly. I start with the 90 degree cutter to square up the end, then the 11 degree cutter to make the crown profile, then the 45 degree cutter to knock off the sharp corners of the rifling. THEN I put the barrel in my lathe and polish the sh!t out of the crown using super fine paper (up to 4000 grit) and oil then finish up with a cloth and JB bore paste. Leaves a mirror finish.
I am hesitant to use the cutters and brass guide on the lathe as I would imagine that the oil/metal “slurry” would get down between the rifling and brass guide and scratch up the rifling. Also, if the brass guide “grabbed” while the lathe was turning, it might bend. Highly unlikely but that is how I do it.
I am a weekend machinist and by no means an expert on machining or crowning barrels but I do what works for me with A LOT of advice from members here especially WOK.

I also have the crowning tool from Bownells that I use with my lathe. Do you take the brass part to line up the tool with the barrel ? What speed is de lathe doing when crowning ?
I re-crowned my barrel and used JB bore paste to “lightly” polish the barrel. I have 11 degree (.22) re-crowning tools from Brownell’s and a metal lathe. I found this improved accuracy on my guns.
