Q:

Help design my backyard shooting range (backstop)

.

here are a few shots of my current back-yard “range”

my garage has two garage doors, a double out the front and a single out the back.

i have a few logs set up that i prop plywood up against.

the first is @ 10 yards, the 2nd is @ 25 yards, the third is @ 65 yards and the white fence which isn’t on my property is 83 yards. (laser measured)

what i want to do is build a backstop just off the fence @ about 80 yards.

what i need help on is the design.

its all fine and good to have a super quiet gun but then to have the THWACK of the pellet hitting the plywood being so loud it echos off the house and then off the buildings (about 1/4 mile away) sorta defeats the porpoise of a quiet gun.

the space between the trees (that are about 5′ in front of the fence) is 4’6″ so i dont want to go much wider than that. and if i want to stay around the 80 yard distance, i can go as deep as 6’+

im hoping to rig some lighting and possibly build a roof over it so it can be used during the, soon approaching, Northern Ohio winter.

I’d like not to invest too much into this but I’m not afraid to hit the local Lowe’s for 2×4’s, plywood sheets etc etc.

so there you have it, please feel free to ask for additional information and or suggest designs for my “QUIET backyard shooting range backstop”

Hey Knot you were on the way to the air gun when taking that pic weren’t you.

I have been playing around trying to make a silent pellet trap and i can get it very quite but not silent,

the quietest is straight into duct seal, no noise . but the card board with target in front of the ductt seal makes a smack sound not very loud but noticeable.

Anybody check on price of a large bag of clay , maybe cheaper than duct seal.

I only bought one bar of duct seal to play with for now.

I know that clay can be quite expensive. I am going to get some duct seal tomorrow.

Thanks Powderburner. I was looking in the wrong section. The stuff I saw was air duct seal. I will check out lowes tomorrow.

In the electrical section ,at lowes is where i bought it.[/img]

A crossman hp at 1040 fps will not go thru it at 2′ from muzzel . and makes no sound when it hits. just bought one bar to test it ,

I think it was $2.28 for a 1# BAR

Is this “duct seal” you guys have talked about come in buckets like spackle, etc. That is all that I saw in Home depot and it was 12 bucks for a small bucket and I will need at least five of those for a small trap I am building. They told me I could go elsewhere and buy a five gallon bucket. Is this the stuff I need? I thought I heard someone say that it comes in “sheets”??? Thanks.

Thats a nice range for sure i only have 25 yards yes i’am jelouse but i shoot all the time and nobody says anything about the noise when the pellets hit the spinner it makes a little plink and i shoot at a woodpile for the vermin on the bait under my feeders . In my head i see trimmed evergreens with nice woodpiles at 25 ,50 ,75 yards at the base of the trees .My pile stops everything and is hidden in the woods next to my place for 4 years i’am thinking of going 25 ft more out in the empty lot but gain that by shooting outdoors from the other end of my house where i’am fenced in . Nobody ever says anything i’am lucky and they don’t miss the treerats or over 100 raccoons that don’t come by anymore to visit us .With all that room i don’t think your neigbors will even know whats going on it will sound like a nailgun in the garage . have fun i know i would . I’am sure this is of no help Chris

how thick is the granite sheet?

i have a 14″x14″x 1 1/4″ sink cut-out from a granite kitchen counter build that takes “2x hands” to lift, how much does your 3’x6′ sheet weigh 😯

how did you attach the granite to the 4×4’s
(gravity?)

i like the carpet layers for a “quick and dirty” solution

.

test

build a standard type 2×4 with at least 2 layers of 3/4 ply wood then put a few layers of carpet on the back stop for the thwack echoing problem and you’ll be set

what ya gonna do about that big garage door being open when it’s 20 degrees outside, be nice to have a small door or window to shoot thru.

synopsys,

i think i will make one of those duct-seal traps for when I’m shooting <80 yards but I’m thinking a little bigger

quote 80 GRIT:

Cement block and concrete do wondrous things, combined with a nice roof (metal for shingle) and you will be in business for a long time. This would require a trap inside the structure however.

Another Idea is a truck load of dirt. Just build a nice mound 😉

Man, I am jealous of your shooting range already!

ya well, ill take a pic when its 20F and there is 2′ of snow… THEN we’ll see who’s jealous 😉

what kind of sound is produced when a pellet hits Cement block?

truck load of dirt….

build something like a 3′ tall “U” on its side… giving the pile sides and back restrictions, forcing it to pile higher
then build a simple sloping roof out of 2×4 and a plywood sheet (shingled) that would keep the rain/snow off the target area

attach work lights to the underside of the roof

make a simple shelf to put targets on

assuming anything goes right, ill have a TT .25 Condor and a Greg Davis tuned Marauder… figure 2′ of dirt should stop either of those pellets after 80 yards and if that doesn’t, what ever i make the “U” out of will be another barrier.

i LIKE IT!!

keep them ideas roll’n in please

You could do a large sized version of this…

WOK posted a detailed breakdown somewhere…
