Q:

Thinking about redesigning my shroud

I have built my own shroud and am wondering if anyone tried to make a bigger around shroud for quieter air report.

Mine is 12” long and the same diameter as the frame.24” barrel. so 6” of baffle. I don’t want any longer ,wont fit into my tactical carry case.

I think it has 7 chambers in baffel.3/8” center tube, vented, wrapped in sheet felt. I have frame open , vented front bushing and vented frame under forearm.

Don’t really even have a air report 800fps and below ,but starting around 900 fps and above you start hearing a slight air report, up to 1000 +fps it increases slightly.

So i was wondering about making a bigger around tube with bigger around baffle, maybe 1 1/4″ to 1/1/2” around. And keep the same length.

Any body experiment with this.

Thanks guys , what i am after is has someone used a 1” I. D. shroud and then went with a bigger around say 1 1/4” or bigger , as to see a difference in the air report out of the muzzle.

When i am up at 900 to 1000fps you hear a substantial puff when shooting.so when you are say out in front of gun around 25yards you hear a puff sound only .Its sounds like say taking a pillow and slaping your open hand on it as hard as you can but with a slighly higher pitch sound.

I had a friend over and he was out in front of target area and he said it sounded like someone stepped on a stick and broke it.

It is very quite, just thinking about trying to see if i can get it even quieter.

Thanks guys , i will work on this and see, also thinking about a 12” barrel so i would need another shroud to fit in the frame.

6” of baffel in frame , i wonder if it would have more air to deal with on the 12” compare to the 24”.

I did what you said and found this. What did I do wrong this time? 😆 😆 😆

hmmm, that’s wierd…try this link:

This is mine, that a great fellow here made for me. (and no you can’t buy one! 😆

It’s a bit bigger in dia. than most, and just looks plain wicked on the gun. Every body that see’s it want’s it for their toy!!!

Powder I’m sure it will make the rifle quieter since it’s displacing more air volume faster which is the name of the game. Not sure how much but it would reason that it would have to and look at your sniper rifle silencers 🙂 that’s a whole different ballgame of course with highly advanced baffle stacks and exotic materials like Inconel and high-grade heat-treated stainless steels.

She said, bigger is better, 😆 😆 😆

I am sure bigger SHROUD would quiet down the gun even more, but it make the gun look very long.

Tony made SHROUD 16″ long, i’t look cool on the gun, but it’s long…..

NO one has changed from a smaller shroud to a bigger shroud.

I guess i am gong to have to be the Ginny pig then.

I bought some 1 5/8” thin wall pipe and will try and find a lathe around here to make the bushing from gun frame to the pipe.

I made the bushing on the 1” one that i have on the gun and it was a ass wipin. I found a piece of pipe that was just larger than the frame hole, welded a washer to a piece of 1/2” round stock ,welded the washer to the pipe so i could turn the pipe down on the bench grinder.

I made the 2” half that goes in the gun frame near perfect, but the 2” part that was to go into the 1” stock for the shroud was under sized.

So i had to build it up with welding ever so slightly as to get it to be tight and be perfect center. (ass wipin)

The baffle part was not bad at all.I had washers just right to fit into the pipe I.D. , welded in between 1/2” coduit that i vented to make a 6 1/2” baffle , with felt wrapped around the vented 1/2” conduit in between each washer.

I know it will get quieter because i built a pvc extinsion for my existing shroud. that is 2” about 6 poly baffles that slides over my exzisting shroud.

It completely takes the air report to a sound that you have to be standing right beside the muzzle of gun to hear. I can shoot the thing like this on the bench but it looks terrible and way long.

at 25 yards you have to have no outside noise to be able to hear it.

This is with gun shooting 15 grain pellets at 1050fps.

here’s some pics of what i built , ruff but effective.[/img][/img]

No lathe , what i had to work with , wire welder ,hand drills, bench grinder, die grinder, tap& die set.

I used pieces of tubing that fit perfectly inside each other, to achieve what you are wanting to do.

Yup, I have… I’ll post more info tomorrow when I can copy paste some data from a computer, can’t do that with my Ipod…
