Talon the handy mans special?
This post is not intended to offend all of the loyal talon owners. my objective is to offer an opinion on the talon to those that might be interested in whether this gun is for them. i have been in airgunning for 20 years, not an expert, but have owned a bunch of guns and shot field target for many years. i sold my talon, 12″, 177, tony tuned. was shooting an avg of 890 with good groups at 40 yds. got an fx royal instead. my impression is that the talon out of the box is a half finished gun. great potential, but needs work. after i had spent a bunch of cash tuning, and adding stuff to the gun i had to wonder if it was worth the final cost/effort. i’ll compare it to the out of the box fx royal. very quiet, great trigger, 34 fpe, l (.22) light weight. the cost will be about the same, after all the mods and tuning are paid for. my impression is that the industry realizes that we want accurate, high power airguns. they are out there. airforce imo needs to step up and improve a good thing, if they are to compete in the new market. some of us would rather shoot than tinker.

What you are forgetting about is the abiility to mod. these guns.
I can change the barrel and caliber in minutes.
The AF guns are great for messing with.
What other pellet gun can you strip down ad change barrels/cal so simply.
Yeah, not top of the line, but very adaptable.

I like the idea of a $500.00 rifle.
Instead of saving all that money over time. (which I am not good at)
I paid for the rifle and spent a little here and a little there to get it to look and perform the way I want. Not the way the factory set it up.
Most of the mods. can be done by anyone, who uses there hands for more than masturbation.
But with thinking like that we never would ever have had muscle cars or Colt 1911’s turned into race guns.
Well first off, the Royal is 1595.00 US. Thats’ 1600. not 1500. Secondly, I’ve been eying them. BUT. for 1 to 2 hundred more, you can get a Rapid with a lot more shots! The Royal is very low on shot count compared to a Rapid. Really no better than a Condor when properly set up. BUT it is more refined out of the Box. But it should be at three times the cost. Don’t forget that many owners of Rapids pay silly money to have them tuned as well. 220Swift is a well known tuner in this area. Shrouds from him start around 500.00 US 😯 You can easily have 2500 or more in a Rapid with a full house power tune. And no one is even doing it on a Royal yet. The real kicker is that the Condor can out power either of them, even after a full 1000.00 US tune. the Condor can easily pus 100 + FPE.
To add insult to injury, Daystate has finally gotten their shit together and produced a Real Winner in the MCT Air Wolf. Think 130+ shots in the 40fpe range in .22 and over 180 at the 30 FPE range. Now thats worth saving your dollars for.
Now if FX had used just a touch of common sense in designing their stock and made it ambi, like the new Air Wolf, and newest Rapid offering, I would be all over it. (Since I shoot left and right) But no, they had to put a sharp roll over cheek piece on the stock. Limiting their customer base. Bummer!
Finally, unlike the Rapid that it is supposed to compete with, it has a crap load more parts in it’s action. It was supposed to be an improvement. But ended up being a step back wards after all. 😕
But I still want one! 😉

one thing nemo has not really considered is that our airforce rifles are so different from one to another.
how many people have an out of the box airforce rifle? not me thats for sure and everyone that sees mine cant believe that it is a stealth or how consistent and accurate it is.
cant say the same about the other out the box rifles out there. ok they shoot well, cost the same (maybe), accurate, consistent….. but its the same as all the others that were sold to so many hundreds if not thousands of others across the world.
this is why the airforce rifle rules.
While it’s true that AF rifles can (and maybe should) be tinkered with, the big variable that you’re ignoring is your 20 years of airgun experience.
Your expectations are leaps and bounds beyond the typical Pyramid airgun buyer who may be graduating from an old Crosman pump that he inherited from his grandfather. For that buyer, he’s getting a gun that is going to knock his socks off with its power and accuracy.
How’s the old saying go? “Knowledge is a Dangerous Thing”.
As long as never stumbles across the Yellow or TAG forums, he’ll probably forever be as happy as a pig in the mud with his OEM setup. 😉
I have to agree with nemo. When tuned(in my oppinion pull out all the crap AF put into it and substitute with my own) they are one of the most reliable guns there are! But out of the box there is a lot to improve. One thing has to be said. I live in holland and overhere the AF guns cost about 900 euro’s. For that kind of cash(or just a bit more) I can buy a selection of guns that performe better out of the box. So what do you do. Buy a empty frame and make the rest 😆 That way the thing cost me about $400,- in total and I have what I want!

PS. I can shoot my gun, put it in a corner and come back a year later and it is still spot on. That can’t be said for a lot of guns!

Then says I’s had to add so many mods to bring it up to snuff, go figure?
BTW my airforce Condor was a shooter out the box, never had to tinker, mod, or do anything else to be happy? Just add scope hpa or co2.

It is true though. Airforce guns are great if you want to tinker with them. If you just want to shoot, they may not be for you.

Same with cars. A Corvette or Mustang may not be as refined as a Lexus, But for the enthusiast, they have a lot more potential. 😉
