Beamshot Red to IR Laser Modification

Directions I followed for this are by “couvillion” on AR15.com

I have an IR laser/Illuminator that can focus into a tight dot and could buy the big surefire clone laser’s off eBay but they are all too bright for my Gen 3 as they are in the 808nm range, then I saw the directions on ar15.com to make an IR laser using a Beamshot and a 904nm laser module which is on the outskirts of the visible range with a Gen 3 and should appear dimmer, but still have decent range.

Ordered my laser’s and Module’s in Bulk because I plan on putting an IR laser on most of my rifle’s so they can be used with my head mounted NV. Module’s came today.

First step is getting the head off the battery tube. I just use a mount to provide leverage –

Then heat the head with a heat gun and after a few seconds put it in soft vice jaw’s –

The bezel will then come apart easily by turning the mount/battery by hand –

Then the old module needs pulling out, there are flats milled into the side’s so unscrew all the set screws and then twist the module, pull straight back. The little spring’s and buffer’s are opposite to the adjustment set screw’s –

Now to take collimate the laser module because as it comes it produces a line –

Because it’s IR it cannot be seen by visible light, but IR is visible to regular camera’s, it also involves a fiddly process of holding a wire and battery by hand, then turning the lens’s and rechecking the beam –

I used a Sony Night Shot Camcorder (again, doesnt have to be “night shot”, my point and shoot would have worked just wanted extra zoom) to see the dot. This is partway adjusted –

and fully adjusted, tight dot… or as tight as this module will allow.

Now to insert the module into the bezel. The spring’s need putting back into the hole’s –

Then using an allen wrench to press them down from the set screw hole’s-

That allow’s me to press the springs down while simultaneously inserting the module at an angle…. very fiddly process and took me a few tries.

This is the module nearly fully seated –

Just need’s to be centered using the set screw’s so it will slide down all the way to the front of the head –

And here is the finished device with my Gen 3… at around 75 yards –

Its not as big as the picture make’s it look, I would prefer the dot be a bit smaller, but I wont be shooting things with the laser at that distance and the laser is the right brightness for me and totally invisible to the naked eye.

Now you got me looking at the 808nm units. They run pigtails instead of springs, though, but the housing should be easy enough to make up. Just have to build in some adjusters. I thought of this project years ago, figured I’d just start wtih a mini maglight housing and weld or thread on a boss to the front end to accept the laser module and go from there, but then I found other pre made IR units that weren’t too expensive so gave up on it. Now you got me thinking I should tackle it again 🙁

Sorry Brutus – I have laser’s left, but I used all the IR module’s I bought.

If you have the parts spare for making up another unit I will take what is needed off your hands to make one. It would be very helpfull with my work as well as hunting.

Nice. I used to have a 50mW military illuminator, but it was so strong I never used it. Too bright. Bought ‘da torch’ instead, LED based, much more useable and doesn’t cause the auto brightness control to have fits. Why have a gen 3 if you are going to overpower it? The only thing is, once you start getting rid of that kind of stuff, it’s always hard to find again, PEQ and PAQ and all the other exotic designators are impossible to find these days. I’m keeping my russian military IR, no one’s selling them anymore and it works so good.

I think I bought the LIF for around $20, it’s new/unused. Iif that sounds about right, let me know. I bought 2 because I thought I’d eventually go with ANVS-9, but these days, I just can’t justify sinking that much into a headset.

That makes sense to me, thanks for the info.

The AN/PEQ-2 etc show up as solid beams because they are a lower wavelength which is more visible to Night Vision and WAY more powerful (50mw/830nm on high compared to 5mw/904nm on the modified beamshot)

I have a Dipol Laser Illuminator which can adjust from a wide flood to a narrow beam that is in the same range and it’s too bright for Airgun range’s with a Gen 3, which is why I went with the 904nm laser’s.

This is the Dipol – I was holding the NV, the laser and a camera in two hands so the picture isnt as good as it could be. I couldn’t take a picture showing the solid beam hitting neighbour’s garage because he had an exterior light on so sky it is.

Just curious why you cant see the beam like a light Sabre. Thats how my bros shit works, said its like the video games. Still pretty cool stuff your doing.

$114 altogether ($52 for the Beamshot and mount (when you buy ten at once) + $62 for the laser module)

eBay has IR laser’s for about $85. They are the size of a 6p flashlight, way too bright and they suck.

YN, nice work as usual. Be sure you have a LIF on your gen 3 to protect the tube from reflections of the laser light in IR. I have an extra if you need one, they’re getting harder to find (mine screws into the objective on a PVS-14).

I’ve thought of that same process, but the cost breakdown didn’t justify doing it. How much were the beamshot and IR module roughly?

Right now I have 3 systems in use on various guns; 1 is a real mil spec IR laser, russian manufacture, very nice but pricey. 2nd is a chinese IR laser, also nice but difficult to adjust, you have to use allen wrenches, I hate this one, you can’t move it from gun to gun, too hard to rezero. 3rd, I use the crosman red lasers (680nm) which cost $15, and install a varistor in series to dim the laser down to barely naked eye visible, which is still very bright in gen 3 optics, so very useable and cheap to run. These go on my airguns. Not invisible, but still, barely detectable since the night shots tend to be less than 10 or 15 yards out. Anyway, let me know how much the beamshot goes for and also the IR module, I’m curious as to cost breakdown.

You’re really into the NV stuff, keep the good work, hopefully you will release a new NV gen-7 some day soon 😆

I’ll get a set eventually… will wait till I see them on sale.
