Q:

R2 vs P7

seems like the only xmas present i get is the ones from my self

any how, i ordered a ultrafire 702B R2 led flashlight to replace my old ultrafire which i gave away, in a sudden act of kindness…dang it

i was very impressed with my new R2 well i was until yesterday

have little spill and is quite focused just what i wanted, it does get warm from prolonged use but not enough to be used as a pocket warmer (more on this later) i realized i had a few bucks to spare so i decided to order a SSC P7 flashlight too, this one features a SSC p7 led which is actually 4 led’s under the same dome.

this sucker has a bigger head, which disappointed me a bit, and when the led pill (led+brass heatsink) is screwed securely into the body of the flashlight the glass rattles, i need to make a little spacer…if it doesnt screw tighly into the body you wont get proper heat transfer….anyhow

where the r2 has alot of throw, the p7 has the same amount of throw, but the p7 has a shitload of spill too so it will light up the whole yard, where the r2 will light up the target

pictures doesnt really do it justice…..they turn out too dark….but they show what im trying to spell out here….

the p7 generates so much heat that after about 20 minutes its getting to hot to the touch that you can hardly carry it (in room temperature) with the pill screw in securely, it tranfers lots and lots away from the led to the whole flashlight….its not just the head thats warm….but all the way to the battery cap and switch…..would be nice in winter time as a hand warmer i tested yesterday with some 18650 protected batts, one battery lasted more than 40 minutes, at witch time i stopped the experiement…ok i didnt stop it…my mom did she thought i had forgotten to turn it off….the R2 was burning along side, as was only a little warm

the human hand can usually tolerate about 50C before telling the brain that it hurts….so i judge the P7 to be little more than that !

with the p7 light that i got….you would prolly ruin the your nightvision (bare eyes) if used to light up a target, because of the tremendous spill …where as the R2 is better only lighting up the target

final verdict….R2 for lighting up the target, P7 to shine your way home through the dark ally / forest and as an handwarmer LOL…for campping i would get the P7….hunting the R2

both very nice flashlights….i got both from dealextreme R2 + 2 batts + charger was 35 bucks shipped…i forget what i payed for the P7 under 35 bucks i think…it needs a little tweaking, but very nice too

BTW i think i like the ultrafire 502B with R2 led the best….longest runtime, long throw, best build quality of the two

i also have a solar force 3W IR flashlight, this is one powerfull IR flashlight ! works really well with sony camcorders, but the build quality as by far the best of the lights i got

i have had the IR surefire, and the quality is really high on everything in that light, from orings, switches to anodizing and threads etc…you just dont get that kind of attention to detail in in a cloned flashlight.

as i wrote the P7 flashlight i got it needs a spacer, and i wouldnt drop it in water…rain should be no prob once i get the spacer made

the untrafire 502B is hard to fault though, it has a clip on it which is secured with 2 screws that is threated all the way though, and is a place for water to get in the light

i have ordered from dealextreme about 5-10 times….free shipping is nice…sometimes stuff shows up really fast like a week or so, my R2 flashlight took 5 weeks…P7 took 18 days….i had a charger that i ordered monday night and it arrived friday…buddy of mine in denmark ordered something back in beginning of november and he got it just before xmas (luckily as it was supposed to be a present) …i havent been cheated….so thats good…just dont expect to get stuff fast, and enjoy the money saved…everything is shipped from hongkong…so it will take some time

i also highly recommend looking at beam pattern before ordering, for distance you need something with a really tiny bright center, and i recommend checking reviews….it took me couple of hours to decide on the P7 flashlights….theres so many different models they all look the same, but they vary on implementation of the LED…som are regulated(longer run time), some are direct drive (more powerfull, but with lipo rechargeables im not sure it matters because they drop from 4.2 to 3.7 really quick and stays a 3.7v until sharply dropping off to 3v)

also some the lights does not transfer heat away from the led to the rest of the light, the spiderfire screws into place, and transfers heat so well, that it will get too hot to touch meaning that heat has been moved away from the led, im gonna drop a bit of silvergrease in the threads to maximise it, once shimmed…but this something i wont know before you have the light in hand

get protected batteries….they have a little circuitry that protect the batts from dropping under 3v

im pretty sure ordering a brand name like jetbeam or surefire you get a super product

Impressive combo and hard to beat price, much cheaper than what I paid for an R2 M20 and a R2 TK11 and output looks good if not comparable…

Nice link, they will surely get some money from me at a later date.

Dealextreme is a mixed bag. Low prices, lots of stuff to choose from. But sometimes stuff ships right away, sometimes it takes a long time. Sometimes they get your order right, sometimes they don’t. Sometimes the stuff you get is a great value, sometimes it’s junk.

thanks for posting this, now I’m gonna have to pick one of these up. looks like some good prices and a decent selection of lights. on the bright side i found a new charging cable for my Iphone for under $2.

Wish I had found this place a little sooner. The have full lights cheaper than I can buy the pills!

Mike

forgot to mention that both lights can run on 2xcr123 lithium, even that should give 6v, the flashlights gets no brighter than one 3.7v rechargeable lithium

found the links for who ever cares
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16178 think i called it a 702b its a 502B my bad…this is the R2

the p7 is a spider fire http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.19767

found this one with charger and battery too for just 5 bucks more with charger and batt http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.24974

Nice!

I bought myself a JetBeam M1X with the mc-e led. This thing is a Light Canon! I have a bit of a center artifact in the beam. I need to adjust it out.

So far, I have tested it out to 200 yards and it stays BRIGHT. 😯

But they hit me for a lot more bucks. Light, batteries, charger and shipping hit a little over 200.=Ouch!
