Vented bushings?

Has anyone tested the sound difference between the same gun with and without vented bushings? Also, I notice when I remove my shroud I have powder (Lead dust?) all over the barrel. My bushings are not vented AFAIK. When you vent them wouldn’t that dust get back inside the working parts of the gun? If so, what would that do? Rather than make another thread I’ll ask this question here too. How long could a barrel be and still make an INTERNAL baffles or shroud inside the condor frame? 18″ or 12″?

I think Cyg. is being modest unless he had it turned down when I shot it it was QUIET.

i only do an internal baffle setup on my SS….cause i want rifle as short as possible….but as i stated it also limits my power, because i run out of volume as power increases

i cant remember my exact baffle setup right now….but my front bushing is drilled…and holes have a funnel shaped holed with big inlets pointing forward

with the funnel shape, you get the effect of squeesing a water hole…same amount of water comes through, just at a higher rate of speed….this leads to more air being able to be pushed through the bushing, than with small straight drilled holes….

between bushings i have fleece tightly wound(from noisecontrol pc silencing matts) this is an open material that allows air through….just before the rear bushing i got 3 holes drilled in the frame in the lower rail to vent air to the outside…it makes for a nice plase to vent as its disguised by the rail.

my baffles, are fender washers, about half of the volume is in the first chamber to catch the initial blast, and then i dont remember what else i have currently

i havent dont anything about tank ping or hammer ping etc…its something the shooter hears, by standers 5+ yards away dont hear it, so i dont care

my valve is tweaked a bit…its drilled to 3.4mm portholes slightly filed….delrin cut in a cup shape, spring retainer has been cut in half…and funneled, tophat is as close to bottle as possible….max power is 37 fpe with EJ, baracuda and crowmagnums do about 32 fpe, JSB 31 fpe….at these power rifle is a bit noisy, but dail it back to 830 with JSB, and its very silent

Cygnus X, are you baffling beyond the frame of the ss with an external shroud? It seems like 6″ plus the vented bushing area is enough to eliminate muzzle noise with an efficient design. I have a very effective 6″ external shroud but it’s too much length for my liking. I’ve been wondering if anyone has perfected an internal only design that is on par with a good external. 12″ bbl .22 cal reference.

Then 12″ it is then. I want quiet. Tony has me spoiled.

15 or 16″, that will hide the barrel and take the worst bark out of it, but no where silent, think you have to do 12-13″ then you can supress it fairly good

Hey Cyg. how long can a barrel be and still have an INTERNAL shroud/baffle? One day I want to build a shorty .25 that ends where the frame on my Condor ends now.

yes i was…..imho venting the front bushing is the last thing to do, it does help but not as much as an effective baffel setup, and tweaking the valve setup, so it doesnt vaste too much air

because of the limited volume in the ss frame, its important for silence that you keep the amount of excess air to a minimum….on my rifle shotting at 830 fps its very silent….but pushing i to 850+ and its noisy….theres a clear border between silent and noisy…its clear that in my setup 850 fps uses too much air for my setup to be silent (when i say noisy…i mean not a quiet as can be, the baffels etc still work) without drilling the front bushing and frame the numbers might have been 810 silent and 830 noisy

i allways try and preserve as much volume as i can….in an SS setup with 12″ barrel…internal volume is what keeps noise down

Hey Cyg was this the gun I shot? If yes, boy it works.

you only vent the front bushing and keep the rear most one intact…otherwise you would get a spray of lead dust in your face with every shot….

venting the front one allows us to expand the volume, which helps disperse the pressure.

i have some fleece between my 2 bushings…and then i drilled a hole in the bottom of the frame for air to escape out of, but the fleece slows down the air, so its less noisy when it comes out….you dont have to drill the frame, but it helps lower pressure faster.
