CO2 vs. compressed air
I know this is very dependent on weather conditions but does anyone have a comparison on performance. I understand that CO2 has less power but, is it as consistent? Also, Pyramid air advertises 1000 shots per fill (I am assuming a 20oz tank) and I was told by one of their reps, co2 is worthless below 65 degrees. Any ideas?

I use a Talon SS with 9oz CO2 bottle and plink or target with RWS R10 Match 7.0gn pellets in 177. The POI is very similar to HPA and 10.6 Kodiak Match pellets.
Plus, CO2 is very quiet. I run PW4 and can hear my hammer and impact only.
CO2 also delays how often I need to get my SCUBA refilled as I can shoot for fun on CO2 all day long and not touch my HPA.
I used it. I live in a tropical country with temp always above 80F.
after learn how much I can fill without being overfilled, I used it on one of my pcp. I know that I shoulld change the oring with a stronger one (duro90), but hell, the only lost just a pair of orings for one pcp. so I just filled one of my pcp with this gas and still working til now (2 months maybe).
one thing I learnt about using this gas compared to hpa is that I need to change the hammer spring with a weaker one. without changing the spring the co2 consumed just like hpa, 40shots or so.
now my co2 pcp consumed 0.5gram per shot. yipiiiee… around 160 effective shots per one filled (100grams of co2 on my 160cc tank). I assumed the last 20% of the gas is not effective (below 900psi). check the link below.
2 weeks ago, I borrowed chrony from a friend and tested it. I got 700-720 fps using 8.3gr rws superdome (177), around 650fps using 10.3gr baracuda match and 600 using local 13.7gr pellet. been trying to use another spring which is 1cm shorter but I got around 550fps (superdome). So i stick with the previous one.
now this gun is my favourite small game gun. rats, doves etc.

Like everything, CO2 is a series of trade offs.
I don’t really hunt, I shoot paper and reactive targets in high volume so power is only an issue when it comes to reaching out to my (current) 30y limit. Not a problem with CO2 shooting from INSIDE my basement which is right around 65 degrees. Consistent – yes if I keep my shooting pace fairly constant. The lower speeds means it’s more reactive to wind movement and probably shooter error (lock time) etc.
I have not chronied my current set ups so I don’t want to throw out numbers that may not hold true but expect mid 500’s. with a .22 and maybe 600 with .177.
I use the EDgun and HW100 when I want more power and accuracy at longer ranges.
Edit – I should add that I get between 650 and 800 shots from a 20oz CO2 bottle on my talons. Fill, temp, shooting speed… all affect the # of shots you’ll get but the biggest impact is from the fill. I got 900 from a full 20oz fill but the PB shops around me insist on filling 10% under capacity. My 20oz then gets filled to 18oz and delivers up to 800 shots. And yes, performance definitely increases in warmer temps (to a point).
I’ve never used it. I would agree it’s better in the summer. Posts I’ve read, it seems to be pretty consistent. HTH

One additional item I didn’t see mentioned about CO2 is that if you shoot several shots fairly quickly in succession, the C02 will tend to cool off the barrel and any other metal part it comes in contact and the poi will become un-predictable. I shoot CO2 indoors in the winter at 68 deg. F and after around 10-12 shots with 15 seconds between shots, I have to wait about a half an hour for the barrel to warm up again before the poi becomes predictable.
This was not an issue in the summer with outdoor temps above 80 deg.
