Webcam Edge/Centerfinder

Saw one on of these over a year ago on a machining forum and have had the parts for a while but only got around to making it as a project to practice with my new CAM program. Posted some of these pics in another thread but figured now its (nearly) finished I’d make its own thread.

Toolpath in CamBam for the pocket that webcams circuit board will fit into –

Machining the pocket (Should have used a larger end mill)

I made the outer part on lathe so there are no pictures.. Finished (except some sand blasting)

The shaft is from a side cutter I’d burnt out.

And the view in Mach3 control software

It can get closer but I need to get a lamp to illuminate the peice. So far it seems very accurate, but it bogs down the older computer I’m using as a CNC controller.

Cutter compensation is beyond my level, but I would assume it will move it as accuratly as the stepper/ballscrews allow.

I’m considering buying a digitizing probe, its either that or buy a new computer for the mill so I can make use of the webcam better.

This one caught my eye (due to price)

I thought about just buying his replacement contactor and a ruby tipped probe for the TP100 (cheaper and smaller diameter) and then just making my own housing/circuit board which would be pretty simply but that seems wrong and I wouldnt be saving much after I bought all the materials and then the time (and undoubted screw ups).

That’s pretty nice for a home cnc. Is cutter comp G41/G42 also in .001 increments?

Have you got a link ! , been thinking about making a touch probe but im not at home with electonics and there fiddly to make, so this could be an easy fix if your just tearing apart a cheap web cam.

Cygnusx, its a P3 1ghz with 256mb. There’s only a problem with the webcam on that PC. It runs Mach3 no problems.

Heckler, I have a ring LED tent light that I was going to strip to the circuit board and make a new housing for. The software allows full CNC control. increments are limited by the ball screw and the steppers. I have 5 tpi ballscrews and standard steppers (200 steps per rev) which gives me 1/(5*200) 0.001 increments. The controller allows for 1/8th of a step which in theory would allow 0.000125″ increments.

That’s cool. I bet two white LEDs would lamp it for you. Either that or make a ring that holds a few attaching around the O.D. So do you jog the axis in that program? What increments will it do?
