I call it a .260 to distinguish it from the other .25’s, which use Lothar-Walther barrels and generally fire .251 pellets. Mine shoots the .258 Meister hard cast bullets. Still in prototype stage. I think the barrels can be had in as much as 27″ but I had to cut mine to 24″ … will post more later, when I’ve had a chance to gather more test data. The .260 you are referring to is the .260 REM, which is a .308 WIN case necked down to accept .264 bullets, which is a legitimized version of the old 6.5-08 wildcat round that’s been around for a long time, since the 80’s I think. The 6.5mm round, now called the 260REM, is one step down from the 7mm-08, one of my favorites for hunting, and which I own several rifles in, and fire .284 rounds. Of course, we americans like the old .270WIN, which fires .277 rounds and is my meat and potatoes gun (a Sako, my favorite). Gets confusing, but sectional density and downrange energy in this type of consideration is only going to make a difference when you are shooting at extreme ranges. We are talking 1000 yds here, which is where the .260REM is making a bit splash because its bullets are so sleek that it retains the same energy and has better ballistics at 1000 yards than, say, the 300WIN mag… with 40% of the recoil at the bench. But, I’m all about the hunting. Although I’ve taken goats past 600 yds, its not exactly what I call my usual shot. 200 yds is more like it, and I’ll bet most hunters find it more comfortable to shoot medium and large game in the 100 yd-250yd range than 1000yds. So for most people, the 260REM isn’t a practical consideration. Only for the way out in left field sniper in the hide bunch or 1000 yd competition bunch.
