Happens to me all the time..just shot 50 Gamo 16.2gr. masterpoints,,gunseems to like them pretty good.had pw on 5.7, shooting at my swinging silhouette targets 47 measured yards and I missed 1 pig..no chrony just shooting cause it’s 65 degrees outside with NO CLOUDS in the sky 😀 😀 😀 seemed like the right thing to do. Gun felt and sounded pretty stable..I started out at 2600psi. Got a note book and keeping track of all this info. just may prove to be useful down the roa, anyhow gun felt really good!.
Doh!
Please refer to my first post of this thread.
Thats some pretty big variations. Valve lock would not give small then big then small numbers. Hammer problems on that scale would be quite obvious. Maybe the valve is a bit new and sticky. What psi fill and pw settings are you using?
OK, I’ll check that, but the gun is still new…has only had 300 pellets run through it since I got it from AirgunsOfArizona 3-4 days ago….but anything man-made can be out-of-whack.Thansk for the tip! I’m learning a lot 😀
My tanks suck until they drop to about 2600psi then they shoot smooth and reliable. You might have simple valve lock. I use PW 4.1, 2600psi, 0.085 on a 177 TSS for 50 powerful shots.
Finally, check the breach. Make sure it is mated with the top hat. If there is any forward play (away from tank) then that will cause a drop in velocity for that one shot. I found I had some fast and slow shots before realizing that it was play in the breach. You can cure it by pulling towards the tank before you let go ~or~ adjusting the top hat forward a little. Either way you’ll get consistency.
Replace o ring with 90 odometer ones! Spray some drylube where the hammer glides trough. Shoot the shit out of it and enjoy.
There were a couple of shots where I knew I had gotten too close…yeah, I’ve checked crony with 2 of my other guns…all is well with them, so I figure chrony is OK as well…
OK..have re-set the TH, lubed the 2 o-rings, will let the loc-tite setup overnight and shoot the hell out of it tomorrow 😀 😀 😀 Oh! and gotta go pickup my new 100cuft, 3500 psi scuba tank tomorrow morning…guy called and left a message …I was outside shooting ’em up and missed his call 😎 Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice /help.
How is accuracy? If those numbers are correct your groups would have vertical stringing.( at longer distances….might not notice at 10 yards)
Do you have a different gun to try on the chrony? The reason I ask is because 1077fps from a stock SS is very high.
It will take some time for the o-rings and everything to break in so I would not mess with much until you have a few tins of pellets through it. After I put in new breech o-rings it is inconsistant for 100 or 200 rounds and then starts shooting good again. Also my top-hat was set at .110 or .115 from the factory and I have not touched it and mine shoots great.
You may need to move back abit from the chrony. If too close will get erratic results.
Sam 🙂
Thanks guys..OK, I’ll lower the top to .090 and run another 200-300 pellets through it..I posted a question about break in… I was testing in my dining room -to-bedroom 😀 I’m single so I can do as I d..n well please!! what about thwe PW? make any difference as far as breaking it in??
I never adjusted my tophat, after about 3k pellets the valve stem broke in two. Airfore set my tophat to .125 and the grub screws (2) were loose. I set it to .093 using a 3/32 allen wrench for a gauge. Also used a smidge of blue locktite. Tophat has not moved since. .090 works for a lot of TAG members.
Make sure the breech o-rings (2) have a good coat of divers silicon on them and run about 500 more pellets through the barrel.
I recommend trying these pellets: JSB Diabolo Exact Jumbo Heavy .22 Cal, 18.1 Grains, Domed, 250count.

If it’s cold outside let the rifle cool down to that temperature before testing?
Sam 😆
I have already used Gamo Hunters and rsw superdomes….same results…numbers a little different but still BIG deviation ..I could” hear” which shots were gonna be way fast and way slow….
Buuz cat..is it normal to re-set the tophat when they’re this new??? I’ve read here that quite a few guys have to do it…wonder why it’s set so “wrong” from the factory? I’ll lower it if ya really think that’s it’s the problem….I want it right ya know..no good when ya have NO IDEA what next shot is gonna be!! Thansk for the help-Rodger
Tophat setting of 105 is too tall. Get it down to .80 +/- and try it again.
By the same token, if it’s brand new, you might want to run another 500 rounds through it to break it in before you start futzing with it.

Sounds like it’s breaking in good know. Yeah, good idea on keeping a notebook….I think it will prove useful down the road like you said.
