FX T-12 Whisper with the new Smooth Twist barrel review

FX T-12 Whisper with the new Smooth Twist barrel in .22

I recently read a post on a forum talking about FX and the new Smooth Twist barrel by Ben Taylor. I also found a link to an article talking about and describing the Smooth Twist barrel. I immediately forwarded the acticle to my friend with the title, “looks like another gimmicky attempt for the manufacturer to save money”. I didn’t beleive all the hype as I’ve found over and over again that reviews from magazines and professional reviewers to be exaggerated and more like an advertisement for the company. It just sounded too good to be true but I couldn’t help but be curious about this new barrel and decided to take the risk when I stumbled upon a great deal. Ironically, I went from being a skeptic to a believer and I just cannot wait to give people the news because it is quite exciting! The FX Whisper is the real deal! The Smooth Twist barrel is the real deal! I am not easily impressed and I am not a fan of exaggeration and hype and this air rifle has me excited!

I think the FX T-12 Whisper is the new contender to be crowned with the title, “King of affordable PCP air rifles”. Some regard the Crosman Marauder as the best PCP air rifle for the money but I have always felt the best air rifle for the money is the Air Arms S410, that is until now. I have no idea if the price is permanent or if this is a temporary special, but Airguns of Arizona has decided to sell the FX T-12 Whisper at an irresistible price of $599. The rifle I bought and tested is the .22 model. It rests on a lightweight synthetic stock and I was very excited to see how this rifle would perform as it also sports the new Smooth Twist barrel designed by Ben Taylor. This multi-shot comes with a 12 round magazine, adjustable buttstock, bull barrel shroud to reduce the report, and a fill gauge on the front of the air tube. I didnt weigh it, but its advertised at 6.2 lbs for the synthetic model. It feels light! It is filled by using the supplied fill probe and the recommended fill is 200 bar or 2900 psi. I decided to fill it to 2800 psi and shot an impressive shot string but quickly learned that this particular rifle likes a high pressure fill. Normally the power curve on a PCP air rifle will start off low, climb to a peak, and then descend back down. At a fill of 2800 psi, I was already close to the peak and I decided to try another shot string with a fill of 3200 psi. Here are the results:

2800 psi fill using JSB 15.9 gr. pellets
The numbers are in feet per second or fps.

876, 877, 883, 881, 880, 880, 880, 880, 881, 877, 881, 878, 881, 877, 877, 877, 875, 871, 871, 870, 870, 870, 867, 863, 862

The shot string was impressive and I couldnt help but get even more excited to see how it would perform where it really counts, in the accuracy department. I was once again pleasantly surprised to find out that the new Smooth Twist barrel is not just another gimmicky attempt for the manufacturer to save money through a simple and cheaper way to produce barrels. I first heard about these smooth twist barrels from one of the posts in the Yellow Forum. I have been curious ever since and this was a big factor in me deciding to purchase the Whisper. Ill be honest. I was really skeptical about this new barrel. I read an article about it and it just seemed like another ploy to mislead and attract people into spending their hard earned money. I was wrong! The FX T-12 Whisper with the ST barrel is a tach driver! I didnt measure these groups but you can see for yourself that they are small. These are unsorted pellets and I used a Caldwell Tachdriver shooting bag to rest the front of the rifle while shouldering the buttstock in the prone position. My breathing, heat beat, and trigger pull were still factors, so just think of what the groups would look like if I were shooting indoors and using a vise to keep the rifle fixed and steady. This is for everyone who has been waiting for some groups from the new Smooth Twist barrel by Ben Taylor.

A target analysis of my 5 shot group from 50 yards .31 inch ctc

I have owned several great shooters over the past year including the FX Royale 400, the Daystate Airwolf MCT, and the Edgun Matador; so I am not easily impressed. Honestly, I am usually disappointed to find out something has been hyped up and have a hard time believing anything I read anymore; especially when reading it from a magazine or from some famous reviewer. I am so tired of being lied to whether is it how quiet a particular air rifle is or how many shots to expect from a fill. It seems as it is quite common and even somewhat accepted for the manufacturer to exaggerate. Although I am very happy with the Whisper, it didnt start off well.

You would expect this air rifle to be whisper quiet right? Well, I wouldnt say its loud but it isnt whisper quiet either. The Crosman Marauder is noticeably quieter but that is about the only thing the Marauder does better. This is the only thing that disappointed me with the Whisper but I was very impressed with everything else so Im not going to complain too much. I really wish the Whisper sounded like the Marauder but that is easily accomplished by adding some baffles in the Whispers barrel shroud. It is just a tube with no sort of baffling, just an end cap, and the barrel is held in place with the use of barrel bushings. The barrel and shroud setup is very similar to the Airforce Talon SS.

Although this rifle is not perfect, I have to give it a thumbs up and it is without a doubt the new king of affordable PCPs. Out of the box the FX Whisper would give any air rifle, at any price, some serious competition. I do prefer the walnut thumbhole stock and side lever cocking of the FX Royale, the high shot count and incredible trigger of the Daystate Airwolf MCT, the compactness, shot count, and consistency of the Edgun, and the power of the .25 Daystate Air Ranger. All of these rifles have their own niche but at the current price of $600, the FX Whisper can shoot with the best of them! It is leaps and bounds better than the Crosman Marauder that my friend Joel was testing right next to me. Joel will do his review of the Marauder soon. I am sure he will have time while his new Marauder goes back to the dealer he bought it from for either a repair or a replacement. I on the other hand will be holding on to my FX Whisper and encourage anyone looking for a great PCP air rifle to get one soon.

the magazines to stick in the Rapid….. I think I would sooner buy a Career and an LDC…. What am I missing?

I’d rather deal with Crosmans Customer service than AOA’s….

Nice review. And I always thought that was a very good looking Rifle! I just received a MROD and have not had a chance to fully test it, but upon my initial crony test it would appear that the MROD may have the edge on shot count. Not by much, perhaps 10 good shots. Also, for around the same price, the customization potential goes to the MROD if coupled with one of David Soza’s aluminum frames.

Very impressive accuracy, no doubt. I am curious how my MROD will compare to my BSA Scorpion in the accuracy department….

What are the odds? Marauder to Scorpion…

I just sent back my second Marauder, about 4 hours ago, and I have to admit that I was a little sad to see it go. Why? Because while it was easily and demonstrably the most disappointing rifle I have ever experienced, I still think it has potential. BOTH Marauders were insanely unpredictable, and it only made matters worse to have Bobby next to me running his non-stop commentary on how great the FX is.

It’s true that the rifle acts like it’s regulated. I watched the chrony numbers as they posted and dup1, dup2 kept rolling in. The Whisper isn’t exactly “whispering” when compared to a Marauder. But it’s quiet enough. I would have bought Bobby’s FX if I didn’t have something else offer itself. Regrets? We’ll see…

Imagine this scene: I’m enthusiastically spreading a tin of Bohumins finest across the entire surface of a 8 1/2″ x 11″ target, edge to edge mind you, and Bobby keeps asking me to stop so he can take pictures of what looks like a dead fly on the 2″ targets. I keep mashing the trigger of the Marauder in front of me looking for some semblance of a pattern. Finally, reluctantly, I get behind the FX and regret putting 12 shots (!) through a dead fly of my own. The disparity was laughable.

The Marauder is gone. It’s not coming back until Crosman squares things away, but it might get another chance. A BSA Scorpion is on it’s way to me now though and I can’t wait to actually hit what I aim at. The SuperTen that Bobby sold here was a favorite of mine and I was the guy who hit the 4″x4″ target at 197 yards with the first shot with it. I’m convinced that a quality barrel can make or break a rifle that may the complete package otherwise. That sounds obvious and I’m sure that everyone here is nodding and saying, “DUH”. But once you see how badly a rifle can shoot with a terrible barrel, you can’t fully appreciate the accuracy you will get with an entry break barrel springer. BSA understands, as FX does, that the barrel is the thing. Too bad Crosman isn’t on board.

FX and Smooth Twist is simply amazing. The value of this rifle belies it’s price and if I had the resources, I would definitely make this my main rifle. Consistent in both power and accuracy, you can’t be disappointed. [/i]

I think I sold my Royale months ago and only did so so I could buy and try other air rifles. My Royale also didn’t have the Smooth Twist barrel. I have a mental A-list and will repurchase a couple of the rifles I’ve sold once I test a few more. Air Arms and Theoben are next.

I had no plans to buy the Whisper and only did because of the price. I couldn’t pass it up and was excited to be able to try the Smooth Twist barrel without having to spend the money on a Royale. Now that I know these new barrels are accurate, I wouldn’t have a problem buying a higher priced airgun like the Royale. The Royale is definitely nicer but from a pure performance view, the Whisper will have the same level of accuracy for $1000 less! The Royale will give you a higher shot count, side lever cocking, about 5 fpe more, and a nicer stock. Accuracy wise they will be the same.

The deal is still on 😀

Hey Varminator,

Can you tell me why you sold your Royale and got a T12 instead? Just curious. Can you also give me an idea of how quiet the Royale was compared to the T12.

Liked your Whisper review. I’m going to call AoA tomorrow to see if the deal is still on.

Don

Great info on the Whisper all. I’m going to look into getting one myself. I really want a Royale for the raw power coupled with the accuracy. Has anyone shot the Royale? I’m most interested to hear how quiet it is with it’s short silencer.

Thanks,

Don

Varminator…Did you use an old Falcon Moderator to scew into your FX Whisper?

I am working on finding someone to make and possibly sell a drop in kit for the Whisper’s barrel shroud to make it truly whisper quiet. I’ll be sure to post if I have any luck.

FX makes a insert for the shroud and its should be on the export models as far as i know so your FX seller should be able to get one for you.
buying one here in sweden its about 30USD if you want to import one you could contact http://www.luftvapen.se/export.html

of you get some one to make custom post pics and results!

pretty cool video …..that gun’s not bad at all like it is…

quote LEE IN VA.:

I finally got to shoot mine today. First of all its a great shooter just like Bobbys gun. I think mine is very quiet especially for not having any baffles in the shroud. Its pretty close to the quietest pcp I’ve ever shot in that power range. I had to check the chrony to be sure it was shooting as hard as it should and it was shooting 18 grain JSB’s at 840 for 28 ftlbs. I need to work on the first trigger stage and it will be a super tack driver but is very nice out of the box.

I did have a couple issues the fill probe is leaking but it may be the teflon tape on the threads but I’m almost certain its the orings, I’ll check it out further tomorrow. Second and what cut my shooting time in half today was the magazine. The first couple of times I was able to get it filled and it operated correctly. After that it wouldn’t cooperate with me. It got to where I had to put the pellets in the opposite side skirt first to fill it. The directions say to put the first one in skirt first from the back and turn it over but it doesn’t spin the part around to keep the first one from falling out so you can fill the rest of the magazine. I’m hoping to get a little shooting time in tomorrow and hopefully have these issues fixed.

An update on this post from yesterday.

The fill probe issue was just a leak from the coupling on my fitting, an easy fix.

The mag issue was really just a matter of getting better instructions that I got from the Whispers owners maunal on AOA’s website. The manual that came with it does give instructions but not as good as this manual.

I didn’t have time to adjust the trigger, I will try to next weekend.

Bobby, I would be interested in a drop in mod that keep the gun the same length. The gun is super quiet but even more would be nice.

Did you request the barrel clamp or did it come with the rifle. I recall hearing that the free floated barrel was a big part of the accuracy. Maybe the Smooth Twist doesn’t need to be free floating??? Just wondering.

It came with the rifle. The barrel has two barrel bushings that ride inside the barrel shroud similar to a Talon SS except the bushings are free and independent from the shroud. There is also a very thin o-ring arounfd the bushings. I guess it is sort of free floating but not really. Whatever they have done for accuracy, it works!

Where did you acquire the LDC for your Whisper?

Thanks,

Carl

Sorry, it’s my first youtube video and didn’t realize it was set to private. It is now viewable. It’s really disappointing how video cameras aren’t able to pick up on the difference of sound. You can hear some difference in the video but in person the difference is huge.
