quality control in Crosman barrels…
Being the newbie that I am, I am always seeking to learn about air rifles/pistols. Recently I have been getting into building .22xx carbines and I noticed that the barrels are different in id (in my limited testing, mostly at the breech end). I talked with Mike at T.K.O. and he explained to me how the order of creation will determine the quality of the barrels…. In fact, many others I talked with via phone, or keypad expressed that Crosman could use a boost in quality control in the barrel churning part of their factories…and from the looks of my MROD barrel I would have to agree.
Anyway, below are a few pictures of two .22 cp’s slowly pushed through two separate crosman barrels. The one on the left was pushed through a 24″ barrel that came off of a Mountain Airguns 2250. The one on the right is through an 18″ barrel that I bought online.
The 24″ barrel was not too tight in the breech and it offered the same resistance (no choke) all the way down the barrel. Notice how nicely the rifling bit into the skirt (so uniform that the pellet can be stood up at a nearly perfect right angle to the table. I would imagine that this pellet would fly downrange the best.
The one on the right, on the other hand, was very tight in the breech, and this clearly crushed the skirt and elongated it on two sides. Each side was disparate from the other and it obviously would not stand up on the table. I can’t help but wonder how this would effect the accuracy of this pellet in flight (please chime in as I am seeking knowledge here…) After this tight breech fit, it traveled down the barrel with the same resistance as the other barrel did.
First question: Is the pellet that kept the skirt uniform going to outperform the pellet that is deformed??? I assume yes, but I know what happens when I assume.
Second question, what can one do to address this “tight breech”? I have ideas, but I defer to the experts. Thank you!

Ah, never really noticed it on my 0.177 caliber barrels… I’ll have to check the 12″ .22 barrel I have that I have never even used…
