YN, True that on the meaningless reviews these days.
C, The shooting bullets was a JOKE!!! For Christ sake.
I have never said Vortex were junk. All I have ever heard of them is form fair to good. Never Junk.
BUT, the review did not point out one single thing that would show this scope to be much of anything at all. The fault was with the review. Period.
It may be a very good scope. but there are several in this price range that have proven track records. How is it that you don’t know of any of them? 😕
Zeiss Conquest
Bushnell Elite 6400 tactical
And as far as your remark, Zeiss, along with Schmit-Bender, Hensholt, Kales, Sworo, and a few others are internationally recognized as the very top scopes in the world. Time tested and proven on the battle field and in the hunting field for decades.
A few more are Night Force, US Optics, and Leupold, —All with high price tags. But again, Proven track records.
The Scope you listed should have a real test report some where!
Can it shoot the box. Flair control. Repeatable adjustments in Focus-ranging-Shooting the box. (for what it is worth, the larger 30mm tubes are NOT for better light gathering, the larger tube has two functions. More elevation and windage, along with being stronger due to larger surface area. Nothing else.
Some of the cheapest scopes out there have every feature listed in the article. Are they there for a reason, or a sales statement. I’m more that sure they are there for a real reason. But NOT ONE was given in the article. Hell, it might as well have been a Night Eater if judging by the article.
To help us poor Ole Continentals out, Zeiss was kind enough to have the Ziess components shipped over here, among with s few of their engineers to assemble the scopes here. Killing the Hugely expensive VAT Tax.
You can get the in Germany assembled Victory scope to fit in this area for around 1800.00-25-00.00 US, or the US Built with German components Zeiss for 800.00 to 1600.00 US. The only thing missing is the let Ret. at this lower price range.
Questions? 😉 😆
I suggest again. Check out the reviews on Sniper Central. A lot to be learned there!
Your title on your post suggested it would be the scope of scopes. All I am asking for is just one tiny piece of evidence to that effect. Anything, Somthing??? 😕
The standards have already been set. It is up to Vortex and every one else entering the quality glass market to come up to those standards.
Hint. NO top Glass or Coatings have ever come out of China, or the Phillipenes. Not even the very good quality camera quality glass from Japan is in the top tier of Optical Quality Glass. It is Very-Very good, but not at the Zenith of Optical quality. That is just the way it is. This part is not just a personal opinion. There are ongoing International test fo optical glass and coatings. No japanese glass has ever finished even in the top 10. And they are GOOD! No Chinese or Phili. Glass has even earned a mention. I doubt very much that the article was correct in stating it was a philli. Scope. If so, That is way too much for it! If it is of at least upper quality Japanese manufacture, It is probably in the money. 😉
Here is a diagram showing the reticle on low power that add’s to my comments above and hopefully clear’s up the discrepency that knife perceived. –

tonka485: so are you going to throw out your nice Vortex scope and buy a piece of crap Ziess now? Seems the guru says you own a piece of junk.
What say you?
Sam 😎
Yeah, Mike knows his stuff! 😎
wow /////reading mike’s post makes me realize this scope conversation is way over my head but……..I’m learning……………slowly………painfully slowly
Simple way to get that answer, unanswered questions go to the Vortex website, duh.
Sam 😆
I would be inclined to listen to Mike, a trusted Guru of glass, rather than some crappy part review/part advertisement of that scope….
As Knife’ says, where the hell is all the relevant and important info??!!
I am by no means an expert on glass, but even I want to know about lens coatings, number of clicks etc….
X2 😉
07,
Optics is Optics…. Does not matter what they are designed for and anyone whining if you had put this in the Optics forum would have been told to shut up.
It’s not a huge deal, just wanted to clear up the misconception (That Mr Lama also seems to share).
Knifemaker:
Any one notice this is posted n the Other Gun Section. This is about OPTICS. We have an Optics section and it would make it easier to find for ever one if it were there. Unless of course this new world changing Super Scope also fires it’s on bullets!
The reason posted in other guns, this is not air rifle optics, As I stated Warning: LE/ Tactical. So understand what you read? Had I written in Optics/nv someone would have complained ‘not air rifle related’, so be it.
Who said anything about” Super Scope also fires it’s own bullets!” Care to explain that rant. Was that just intended to be plain “Stupid”?
Like Yellow Ninja said I wont base my opinion on one that’s so very biased. There is no scope in this price range, Reguardless brandname with the same features. I’d like you to try and show me that brandname and same feature scope.
Super scope? No, but it will be the one to “set the standards”, so we will see.
Sam 😆
Mike,
The difference between the photo and the diagram of the reticle may be explained by the strange angle it was taken at and that the photo was taken on low power where the reticle will be its smallest but the diagram shows it at full power?
All the other stuff… Do we usually see anything different on “reviews” in magazines? No substance and everything is awesome no matter the manufacturer is all too common these days.
I have heard good things about vortex, Not saying I’d jump on this without a LOT more research and some impartial feedback but I wouldnt dismiss it right off.
Ohhh! Mikes on a roll… 😎

Strange. A few things don’t fit here.
The power numbers on the adjustment ring are WAY too small for a Tactical Scope.
the Terrets are very small in dia. for a Tactical Scope.
They show a pic of the Ret, yet the camera view from behind shows an entirely different stata bar.
And why a 150.00 difference between a first focal plane choice over the second focal plane choice. Odd.
It claims in the article to have HD lens, which is a given type and quality lens with very high resolution performance, yet in their own product description, it is listed as XD. Which means nothing at all as far as I am aware. . It is not a industry standard for anything in the optical industry.
The illuminated ret. needs to be able to go VERY LOW. Every one makes a big deal of how bright they go. Just about a useless feature. Kinda makes me wonder if MAR’s has a clue as to what a Tactical scope needs to be able to do.
No mention was made as to light gathering. Resolution. color Rendention. Even semi accurate Focus. WTF exactly was this review supposed to be about. Looked a lot more like a very lame advertising spot than any kind of first review from any one who knows anything about optics at all.
Are the Optics Coated? Multi Coated? Fully Coated, or Fully Multi Coated. And with what? Anything been done to control stray light in the scope? Where is the Glass from. And supplied and ground by who?
A big deal was made of the rubber coated zoom ring. Tasco had that on their cheapest vari-scoopes 30 years ago. 😕
It has a 30MM tube, so how many clicks of elevetion does it have exactly?
It only takes a couple of minutes to find out. It’s a very important part of a Tactical Scope review.
You can buy a Real time tested Tactical Scope for almost the same kind of money! Hell, Even a Zeiss! (If you do a little research) And every single point in their manufacture and mechanical and optical operation is well documented.
Check out the reviews on Sniper Central for starters, and then go from there.
And lastly, That’s a LOT of damed money of a scope from the PHILIPPINES! It’s resale will be Zilch. 🙁

Ordered mine at $849 with 5% off from opticsplanet (~$807.50).
I got mine for 400 bucks at scopes best buy .com………..It was regularly 500

FYI, the glass for the Viper PST is sourced from Japan– thus I’m hoping for glass clarity on par with the Bushnell 4200 or 6500 line. The tubes and assembly are completed in the Philippines.
Will they be the ultimate scopes? No. However, they offer a hell of a lot of features for the money and according to my buddy Scott who owns Liberty Optics if the pre-production versions at the SHOT show were any indication Vortex looks to have a winner on their hands in the context of getting the most scope for your dollar. Vortex also has fantastic customer support.
Personally I have two 6-24 PST’s on order for my .223 squirrel guns; they’re the last 2 scoped rifles I have that don’t have FFP mil/mil scopes on them. I didn’t feel like spending Nightforce, IOR, or USO money on the squirrel guns (compared to my long range larger caliber guns) but want FFP & Mil/Mil and a useful ranging reticle without putting the equivalent of an optical turd on top of them. I don’t expect the PST’s to be as clear as my IOR’s that use Schott (German) glass but I do have high expectations for them given that Scott has a *lot* of optics experience and has never offered bad advice to me. He said they’re worth a try, so I’m going to give them a try. I’ve had Leupold Mark 4’s, Nightforce, IOR, Bushnell 4200 & 6500, USO, Trijicon ACOGs, etc, so my standard for the PST is going to be pretty high. If it has weird chromatic aberrations, fails the box test, the knobs feel “mushy”, the clarity isn’t enough to discern a ground squirrel from walnut tree debris, or the reticle scaling is off then they’ll get returned or sold. I’m putting a lot of faith in Scott’s recommendations and approval based on his experience and my experience in trusting his recommendations.
Just going to the pics, I’d like to see a larger elevation knob with more adjustment per rotation (my IOR’s with the large elevation knob have me spoiled.) Having different R/L colors on the windage knob would be nice too– that’s a gripe I share with the Elite 4200 3-12 FFP I have on my EDgun.
And for the record… other than having some decent pictures that I haven’t seen yet that “preview” was pretty bad when it came to actual content.
