Q:

Gun threads cut and valve results.

Well, The die came today and I managed to cut the threads, It went very easily. Cut like a dream.

One thing I did notice, Looking at the cutters on the die, Using it one way around which had more of a rake angle. It cut okay but seemed to CHIP away the metal rather than cut it. The other way around with less of a rake angle it cut well, Seems like the brass didnt like the high rake angle.

Im trying it in stainless steel in a few days, give me strength 😀

So, now onto my ultra flow valve results. With a large valve opening and 4 ports in the stem, at 2000psi (What I want to get my reg set at) I was only getting 650 fps with 27 grain pellets. I let the pressure drop to about 1800 psi and got 760 fps, I then let it drop to 1400 fps and got 860 fps.

I now need to increase the hammer spring tension so that the valve will open fully at 2000 psi and the should hopefully get me up to around 1000 fps with the 27 grainers so I should settle around 950 with 31 grain barracudas

Im really looking into them now, thanks.

£229 from uttings for the same one as you, I might just have to get that S410 tuned and get that sold 😀

Dave

I got a 300 bar(4350psi) 12ltr tank. Cost £215 with fill hose gauge and bleed valve.
Best 215 I’ve spent.

Fair enough Pab.

One question, What fill tank do you have? pressure? size? and what price did you get it for?

Thanks

Dave

Not liking the barracudas or something? or just sticking to JSB’s?

I dont have the cash at the moment but would take you up on that offer when I do

Dave

Barracudas are good, don’t get me wrong, But the JSBs are a fair bit more accurate and consistant at the 80+ yrd ranges. They just can’t be beaten. 950 up to 1060 they still shoot good in my BSA.

oops, double post.

I haven’t tried the .25 superfields. What weight are they?

I might have a talk with my local shop, He doesnt carry much stock but says he can get anything in.

I would have to get him to order the barracudas so if he can get the Kings for an okay proce than I might as well get some as well.

Dave

Let me know what you can get hold of them for… 😉 😀

And I have 2000 Barracudas. I can flog you some for the same I paid for them, about 4.95 a tin I think

Will do Pab, I also see the Bisley superfields

They were awesome accurate in .22, have you tried them in .25?

Pab, If the Kings work well, I might have to make a large order from the US

Dave

I actually saw some down my local gunshop the other day. Apparently Theoben are importing them 😀
My gunshop was asking 13.50 a tin for them 😯 👿

I’m sure they can be sourced cheaper elsewhere…

It cut better for me with the writing facing away from the direction of travel.

It did make small chips but on some of the cuts on the lathe, they have come off as continious chips

Hi Dave, good work you are doing there.

The Die should fit into the stock with the size, writing, etc facing you so that when used, the face with the writing on and the correct rake and clearance and lead are what cut first, that is the face with the writing on towards the work. You can reverse the die once the thread has been cut so that a little closer to the valve shoulder can be achieved. The turning back every 1/4 or half turn is not of any use when cutting brass, and I never do it anyway with steel, the constant chip breaking can be more detrimental to the finished thread form than produces a constant helical swarf.
If the brass you are using is class A then a continuous chip should be formed, but if either of the two phase class B brasses are cut, these will produce small chips due their inherent brittle nature.

Nice numbers !!!

Thanks guys, I just need a few more bob in my pocket and I will get the reg from JDS on the way

Then Im going to have to buy some pellets to do some strings, Hopefully I will only need to do one string to verify the shot count from a 3000psi fill
