Took my two birds to the range for some shooting…
…and I am sad to say that I still am in quest of the 100 yard moa group 😥
I took out my .25 TT barrel and put in my .22 as I was testing a variety of pellets. My 24″ barrel always preferred jsb’s and EJ’s (oddly, it was never very fond of kodiaks…)
My 18″ barrel (from Mike “Knife”) liked the kodiaks pretty much as mike said. Since I have this carbine set up with a foregrip (not as of late last night, however…she is “back to the drawing board”…I going back to a “forearm” (will post pics when it is completed 😈 ) I shot in a “semi-off hand” position (seated with both elbows on the bench gripping the foregrip with my left hand…)
The wind was out of the southeast at 15 mph…I can’t help but wonder if it had some effect on the light 18.1 jsb’s at 100???

The below picture is of a group shot from my AAA condor at 50 yards with the 18.1 JSB’s. I was surprised to see the first three shots touching as I know these pellets were screaming way past 1100 fps. This is a Tony built Condor that has achieved over 100 fpe with surefires….I assume these would have became unstable at 100 yards at such speeds. The other groups shot at 100 yards from this rifle was when the fill pressure was lower and they were subsonic. but in this 50 yard group shots 4 and 5 moved away from the group….I am going to crony these to see just how fast they left the muzzle (just curious).
This next group was with the same JSB’s and it was .855″ctc @ 50 yards. If not for that one “flyer” it would have been a really tight group!
Here is my best group at 100 yards with the JSB 18.1 traveling subsonic
If not for that one shot…this may have been the “MOA” group I have been yearning for!

Now onto the 18″ barrel on my unmodified condor. I shot kodiaks out of this barrel for todays test

All in all it was a good day at the range…although I was hoping I would have had some good news to report for surefires in .22 😥 Good day gents.

Joe, I hear ya!! Firts thing I did after my divorce was final was to buy me an acre of land that is 27 miles from the nearest traffic light…TRUE STORY !! Wifey had to live near “the malls” .Not to rub it in, but it is the “ultimate” for an airgunner…I have PERMANENT range in my front yard, 20 yards, spinner targets, fixed targets even one of those Gamo auto-reset targets in a box….back yard has 25 and 50 yard stations, swinging silhouttes, spinners and fixed targets….. inside, I have my chrony and printer PERMANENTLY setup at one end of the kitchen bar, with a 10 yard spot measured off….Anyway, the bottom line, just like you said, is shoot-shoot-shoot!
Shoot so much that it almost becomes like a non-paying job…definitely shoot so much that it really isn’t much fun after a while…BUT it HAS to be done if you’re ever going to KNOW FOR SURE what your gun will do…AND WRITE IT DOWN…..you can’t remember all that info, and you’ll end up having to do it over…I know this for a fact to be a PITA..in the end though , it’s worth the effort. 😎 😎
yeah, I too wonder what benefit a regulator would have on accuracy…but then I think about my unregulated BSA scorpion and how it sends pellets through the same hole all day…I suppose it would be a greater benefit at longer ranges were variations in fps would have a greater effect on POI.
Yep, I agree, you got to shoot shoot shoot , learn the pellets, pressures, distances,temp. scope , ect ect.
I know for a fact that most springers shooting hot wont be as accurate as a well tuned springer.
SO Im wondering if that knowledge may have carried over to the PCP a little bit.
I dunno , Im no expert either ,Its just my opinion, take it for what its worth , try it out. but my 24 inch barrel , 22 condor fires OK at those ranges .
I still belive if the shots were regulated , I could get my one inch group .

It is very frustrating to say the least. I suppose the only way to truly find out is to shoot, shoot, shooooooooooooooooooooooooot!!!! Unfortunately I don’t have the time to hit the 100 yard range on a regular basis…one day (within the next 3 years) we will sell this house and move to the mountains (perhaps North of here) and buy some acreage!!!! 😀

That does seem to be the consensus.
But Im also shooting some heavy pellets too
which are a little more stable . and my drop rate is less ,But it works for me .
my groups are about 1.5 -2.5 inchs @ 100, 110 120 yards
which I think are good , but not out standing ,I think a lot of guys on here can shoot that , So it doesnt get me any bragging rights ,But Im trying for that elusive 1 inch group @ 100 yards too
But if I were to shoot for score @ 50 yards, I would definately drop the power down as I wouldnt need all that ass to put me on paper and I belive the shot to shot consistancy would be better too
But if your fireing smooth with 800FPS @ 50 yards your down to around 650 fps @ 50 yards ,and @ 80 or 90 yards probably around 400 FPS
I didnt check that with chairgun , but I think it’s a close guess.
But lets assume its close , an 18 – 21 grain pellet at 400 -350 fps or less @ 90 – 100 yards IS going to start to wobble or begin lose its accuracy too .
My reasoning could be wrong , but my Condor shoots pretty good @ long range and high power

The neigbors get pissed if I tag thier window or thier car , thier kinda funny that way
So I made an agreement not to hit thier windows while they are watching TV

I know some people might have different opinions bit I think shooting in the high 800s to low 900s is the best speed. I have had the best accuracy when shooting 875-900fps with all weights of JSBs and Kodiaks. When I get in the high 900s and higher my groups start to open up and flyers are common.
Do a search for Yrrah on the yellow. He has poated dozens of tests on velocity, BC, and accuracy at long range.

I had a guy shooting a muzzle braked .308 next to me. The blast was hitting me in the side of the head! I was timing my shots inbetween his shots..the whole time I was thinking how jealous I am of all you guys that live on large properties 😡
It can be very frustrating trying to figure “ideal” pellet speeds for particular pellets…I wish that the manufacturers of pellets would spend time testing their pellets and post the results on each tin…you know, something like: “best if traveling at xxx fps” Wouldn’t that be grand! Now I pose the question to all of you who know something about bc and aerodynamics, etc. WHY THE F@%K DON”T THEY 😡

Just kidding !! 😛 My groups are about the same from my bench with my .22 cal Condor.
I like to shoot my pellets hot . I havent had much trouble with any of them tumbling or spinning and I was surprised Because of all the Tom Gaylord talk of unstable pellets at higher velocitys .
The pellets are much heavier now too, so I think that may be a factor here.
However, my shot string is much shorter too.
You know,when your talking about 1/4-1/2 at 100 yards , a few FPS, up or down could make the difference.
Now were talking about small fractions where everything could make a difference.
I had a nice 3 shot group at 120 yards before I,…. I ….I was startled by a bigfoot!!! 😛 Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh Thats the ticket!!Although he thought it was a good group anyway.
Thats one thing I dont like about airgunning . Its hard to control high FPS at long ranges

IMHO, a 15 M.P.H. cross breeze will have an effect on a 40 Gr. .22 L.R. bullet at 100 yards. You need to try it on a dead calm day, off of bags. I bet you will get there.
