Thinking of getting a shotgun… any suggestions?
I have been looking at the offerings at the local stores.
I want a gun good for goose if need be, but it will be mostly for ducks and likely field shooting and not from a water based blind.
(edit) make that mostly for geese, just remembered I am not all that fond of WILD duck…. LOL!
Also, maybe some pheasants, turkeys (all over out here).
(Ducks and geese fly right over my house each year, and LOW TOO. They land in the fields nearby and I could even shoot them out the sky from my backyard with no problems.)
I have my eye on either a Mossberg 835 Ultimag or the Remington 870 Express Supermag. I have also looked at the Bernelli Novas too.
I like the idea of the Mossberg, ported barrel, “overbored” barrel to reduce recoil, seems like a nice gun.
Probably won’t shoot a lot of magnums though, but want the option if I can.
An autoloader would be nice too though, but trying to keep cost down to below $400 or so.
Any suggestions! Opinions!
This would be the first shotgun of my own and I have not hunted with a shotgun in 30+ years!!!!

500s are tough and reliable, plus they’re modular, so you can configure them for anything from a goose gun to a SHTF zombie killer, and everything in-between.
They go for about $350 new in this neck of the woods.
+2 but for hunting I prefer an double. That swat tube is bad ass for the 500!
Punt gun. I promise it will kill anything you shoot it at, including most boats and aircraft.

Am itching to buy now, but need other things more right now. It is a ways off for hunting season anyhow, so will give me time to look for the best deal.

i am a huge fan of my banelli nova….it will handle a 3 1/2″ mag, its light weight (kicks like a mule) and they are still reasonably priced… 😈

If it’s a duck and goose gun you can’t beat A mossy 835 wingshooter have mine 3 years and it’s sweet i shoot 3inch blackclouds and it takes geese easy even at 40 yards . shoulders nice and cycles real well i get off all3 shots as fast as my bros semi auto remmington can’t go wrong for the price .

I belive this gun is a allaround winner JMO wouldn’t trade it for nothing more exspensive
Look into the mossberg 500, I think they’re one of the best, most reliable guns for the money. I don’t own one thought it’s just from what i’ve seen them and the 870’s seem good for just the basic model without the looks and all that.

I own an 870 and it’s ok and the action feels a bit cheap. I bought it with the long barrel for shooting clays and bought the shorter barrel and a mag extension for it’s HD duty.
For hunting i’d do an over under or side by side.
And for clays or skeet an over under or semi-auto.
I like the classic feel for fowling, I know in CA if I hunt I would need to put in the mag block to restrict myself to two rounds (might be three I don’t recall) before reloading… So really a high capacity pump reduced to a double shot is a bit clumsy in the field.
Plus a breakdown over under is soooo sweet. 😯

I picked up a used SBE 1 and love it.. It digest everything 2 3/4 bird shot to 3 1/2 turkey loads.
You do not need the SBE II crio barrel.
