Response from AF on Hydrotesting…
I spoke with AF today and they said the following:
* Tank does NOT require visual inspection every year.
* Tank DOES require hydro every 5 years.
* Tank valve needs to be removed counterclockwise.
* Tank valve thread is M18/1.5 and can be tested by Paintball and some SCUBA depending on their adapters.
* AF does NOT hydro their own tanks.
Wok, you’ve got a lot of experience with the tanks… is the thread and removal information correct?

How did they connect to your tank?
Would you be able to post more info from that testing facility?

I will call the dive shop in the morning and ask them. I know that they send all the tanks out once per week for hydro testing, so they might put me in touch with the “hydro man”.

I bought an airforce talon ss off of the yellow and the tank was dated 2004. So when I took the valve out to do the “flow mod” I took it to my dive shop to have it hydroed. Everything came back fine 😉
Only had mine for a year so no hydro for me yet. However in 5 years I will try to find someone to do it.
If we get a lot of people with 5-10 years then it bodes well for reliability of the tank.
Owning a tank has about zero to do with suitability for service or cycles and stresses during that ownership.
Let’s find one that has been hydrotested.

tested even 1 AF tank….. Even AF did not give out any information on a
business or business that are hydro testing their tanks…. I don’t think it has
been done by anyone as of yet….
Maybe they should get a new chrony to see what the problem is 😛
You laugh but, I have chronied as many AF tanks as have been hydroed…. 😆

These folks might.
They do most of the hydro testing for the area around me. I’ve been there a few times and they have quite the setup. They do paint ball and compressor repair. They have a full metal shop too. Good bunch of folks.

I think paintball hydro testers are the closest match for us since PB is going HPA. I haven’t heard back from these: http://www.hydrotester.com
Of course since our tanks are DOT certified we should contact a DOT certified tester in our respective state.

Talked to the dive shop and hopefully I won’t change the story in the translation 😕 but he told me that they have every adapter imaginable to hook up to any thread count…and that they hydro with water, but they use air as well to achieve a 5/3 pressure so on our tanks they filled it to 5,000 psi while the tank was submerged in water. Prior to the fill test they measure the tank and if the last measurement (after they fill to 5,000 psi) exceeds the first measurement by more than 10 % the tank will fail the hydro test.
If you guys are interested in seeing exactly how many percent larger my tank remained after the test, next time I go to the shop I’ll ask if the hydro man saves records (as he should) and perhaps he can tell me. Hope this helps.
