Failure to Fire
How often do you get a failure to fire with your rimfire rifle…….FTF in this post.
I started with Wolf match extra, never a FTF. That got too pricey fast. Moved onto CCI mini mags and subsonics, no FTF’s either. I buy CCI ammo at the local gun shop when in stock and from Wally when they”re out of stock. See no difference?
Tried the Bulk CCI Blazer ammo. Had some FTF’s, was expected due to being low quality. some bullets were loose. Bought these at the local gun shop
So the other day I decided go to Wally World and try the Bulk Winchester 333 ammo. Once at the counter, I could see they had Bulk Federal Automatch 325 rounds. I have read many good reviews on the Automatch and bought a box instead of the Winchester 333.
I haft to say I “was” very impressed with the Automatch. It seems to shoot harder and louder then the Mini-Mag. Accuracy seems better than the Mini-mags also. But at 75 rounds fired, I have a failure to fire! The pin made a thud, and I thought it was loaded and it was. Looking at the round, it had a normal firing pin hit mark, and I rotated and rechambered the round and it fired.
How would you weigh this against buying more of a Match grade (I know not match quality) Bulk ammo. I have about 250 more rounds to fire, to complete their evaluation.
It’s been along time since I had a failure to fire and expected better from Federal, had it been regular bulk ammo, would be normal, but I expect more from the label “Match”?

I have had three failures in 22 rim fire and a few low powered fires in federal bulk, but the gun still ejected the brass.
Thats all the misfires I have had in 22 rimfire ammo.
The misfires and the low powered was from older ammo around 10 years old so i chalked it up to old ammo.
The Remington 22 short high power shoots between 750 and 1050 , it is advertised to shoot 1000 fps, so It is also old.
I bought some new ammo and it shot more accurate and within 10 feet per second. So I recon it’s how long it is kept or the environment it is kept in. 🙂
No failures from any CCI ammo, but the Rem Thunderbolt stuff, at least 1-2 in each 50 count box in a brick I have.
I shoot 10,000 rounds a year easy and found different ammos to be sooooooooo different in number of failure to fires. Remington bulk is about every 4th bullet! If I use Federal match grade I rarely get a single one per thousand. Depends on what I am doing and how much patience I have that day which I use!
SK Standard, about 3000 rounds no ftfs… New Ruger 10/22 USST…
Switched to a Volquartsen bolt handle and developed all kinds of issues… 😕 But no ftfs…
Was running CCI green label and Augila ammo but it’s about as accurate as throwing a rock, but still no ftfs…
Doubt I’ve shot anywhere near the amount you guys have, but I’ve never had a faliure with Win subs, Stingers or Geko Match. From a CZ Varmint.
Failure to fire is common in all rimfire ammo. That is why Nobody uses a rimfire as a self defense weapon…except Llama, but he is still learning and has enough common sense to learn from other’s mistakes. The FTF rate varies from lot to lot. It differs from one manfacturer to another. My best success has been with CCI Stingers, and the Augila ammo, (Remington made in Mexico). But that could change with the very next box.
Imagine millions of rounds being produced on those machines. Slight misadjustments may not be discovered before crappy ammo is boxed and shipped. That primer compound needs to be squeezed uniformly around the base of the case and sometimes it just doesn’t make it all the way around. The FTF is the result.
I believe that the Freedom Arms cowboy style, plow handle .22 single action reveolver has dual firing pins to help insure positive ignition. There may be a few others also. I have often wondered why dual firing pins, (and extractors), are not standard on rimfires/firearms? The Mossberg 590 12 gauge shotgun has dual extractors as specified by the Marine Corp way back when the weapon was designed for them, (the entire 500 series may have dual extractors). I’m sure that there is a good reason that I am not aware of. Perhaps someone else knows and will enlighten me. 😉

I ran about 130 more rounds of the Federal auto match through the cz452 with no problems, but I also ran about 100 CCI subsonicx and some of those was a bitch to close the bolt on. Guess I’m going to be like mr-lama and give up on em when I run out.
