Q:

Air gun scope on centerfire rifle?

Getting ready to get my first ever rifle, a .243 Savage Edge. We generally use shotguns here for deer. Wondering how well most air gun rated scopes hold up on powder burner rifles in this caliber? Thinking maybe my Bushnell Legend or maybe getting a Leapers?

I shot rifles for over 55 years without an adjustable objective and never had a problem.

Variable power was much more important to me, since my range varied a great deal.

Unless you are shooting bench rest, and accuracy is of “minute of angle” importance, then just get the best scope you can afford. Good quality lens are way more important for most shooting than AO.

In my opinion, AO is always better.

It helps when target shooting, lets you fine tune it. If you are in the woods, and you can’t see more than 50 yards, set the AO at 30-40 and leave it there. Your target will be pretty well in focus but you won’t need to adjust it.

If you want it to match a non-AO scope leave it at about 100 yards. But parallax is going to be worse the farther and closer from there you get.

No the AO wold be a hinderance in those conditions Lee.

It is only for precise shooting, not the fast close in stuff you are describing. Until I started airgunning, all my leupolds were non AO.

Thanks for the fast reply’s. One more question. Is AO needed? there are thick woods here but open bean fields also. So shots could be from 10 to 300 yards.

Most airgun scopes will stand up to firearms recoil. Especially a .243 which is not a big recoil rifle.

Check the scopes info section, as most of them will identify whether they are solely for air rifles, or will stand up to firearm recoil.

Actually, a springer is harder on a scope than a firearm, given the nature of the recoil.

I had leapers on several rifles, before I knew better. 😉

They do work, as much as a cheap scope will work. I had a 4-16 leapers on a 300 RUM, and it held up fine.

It will never compare to a good scope, but they do work.
