Q:

What is the best accuracy I can expect out of a 10.1"..

…Lothar Walther barrel pcp? I want to be realistic in my build of this pistol/carbine. Right now it is pushing 7.9 cp’s from the 880’s to the 910’s. ES is at 27 for a twenty shot string. I did some preliminary accuracy tests with a red dot scope (1x) at 20 yards and the best group I shot was a little less than 1/2″. I also tried a few groups with the kodiak heavies and I did no better than the cp’s.

I know my groups will improve with a magnification scope…but I just wanted to see what some of you guys had achieved yourselves with the 10.1″ LW barrel Crosman sells???? Thanks.

re groups improving without shroud…. it’s all in the air turbulence due to the internals on the shroud.

this is why folks who make shrouds and silencers tend to try different baffle combinations and such… not only for efficiency in noise reduction, but also in trying to keep the pellet from becoming unstable within the shroud.

Rob,

I decided to slow this one down by turning it into a Co2 cart pistol like the Crosman 2300T. I just put it together and ran a 37 shot string with an ES of 27 a low of 564 and a high of 591 with 7.9 premiers. This is with a Boss valve (stock internals) Transfer port poly tube mod and all polished up. I am also running a stock disco spring with a polishd disco hammer. I believe I will be able to get it moving faster—should I want to—after I install a power adjuster. Did a preliminary 15 shot count to see how accurate it was with the RIch in Mich shroud on it and so far it looks good. However, the group was only shot at 5 yards away. I will try it at 10 and 20 yards in the am. Now that they pellets are moving much slower, perhaps the “turbulance” will not be as adverse on accuracy. If it is a shooter, it will remain a pistol. It balances wonderfully. Will post pics soon.

anxious to see your next build… you’ve been doing great on these Crosmans. I’ve got a couple of builds planned for the Winter months and have been collecting bits here and there… should be fun!

Thanks Rob. Yeah, if I had it all to do over again, I don’t think I would have dropped nearly 50.00 on that Crosman barrel. I don’t have any other .177 crosman barrels to compare to the LW but I am glad you have the experience with them and your word is as good as gold to me. We live and learn and hope that the countless lessons leave us with at least some change in our pockets 😡 Thanks Rob. Needless to say, that gorgeous looking carbine is now in a bunch of pieces and I have already begun building something else with some of the pieces. This is what I love about these “Lego” Crosmans…. 😎

The shroud adds weight and bulk and so POI will shift. Dont necessarily mean it’s clipping. Try adding a string with a weigh tied to each end over your barrel and shoot, you’ll see the same sort of POI shift. It’s often not as prevalent on a PCP, but is easily noticed on a springer or a short barreled PCP or pistol.

I cant post pics now at work, but I have some groups out of a Crosman barrel at 12 inches that are near 1 hole.

The general consensus is that the price difference is not justified for getting the LW vs a Crosman barrel…. but of course, that is open for debate.

Shot some more groups. With the full barrel shroud (Rich in Mich) I averaged 1/2″ to 3/4″ groups @ 20 yards.

When I took the shroud off, I noticed that my POI dropped two inches low and one inch to the left 😯 I did not expect this. Is this due to “clipping”???? When observing the barrel inside the shroud with a flash light everything looks to be aligned perfectly. Also there is not visible evidence of clipping on the crown of the shroud. What other reason would cause the POI to change so much from shroud to non shroud????

Also, my groups improved without the shroud on. I shot two 1/4″ groups and two 1/2″ groups so they improved by 1/4″.

Any theories?????????????????????? Thanks.

Will get to some more testing this morning(after I fire up the coffee pot that is). Wish I had some more pellets on hand 😥 Only have the Cp’s and kodiak heavies. One thing is for certain: this is one mean looking pistol/carbine. Now I have to get it to shoot as good as it looks.

I would say that it would be as accurate as a 12″ barrel in a talon. 2″ diffrence shouldn’t effect accuracy.

They will still spin at the same rate, 1″ of barrel will make the pellet spin the same as a 24″ barrel as long as it follows the rifling.

I agree with Pab, it won’t be a supersonic power house and retain any kind of accuracy, just too much air rushing around the pellet as it leaves the muzzle.

Like I say, I would think it would be comparable with a 12″ barrel in an AF gun in relation to accuracy and power.

Dave

Now there’s a question!
Well, I guess the shorter barrel will provide less spin, and as we all know, a longer projectile requires more spin to stabilise it. So a short compact pellet would be a good place to start, nice and light too. As to what make or brand, thats gonna be a case of suck it and see. I know from reading others experiences that ballistics can throw up some real surprises when it come to performance! Just ask the guys that load their pellets in backwards to get greater accuracy!! 😯
Hell, RJ is shooting fucking fishing weights with good results!

Out of my 18″ .22 LW, kodiaks like about 880 for best accuracy, in the 24″ they like 950. You can get them up to 950 in the 18″ but they are not as accurate. I believe this is due to the extra air needed to get them that fast in a shorter barrel, which in turn upsets them as they leave the muzzle with all that extra air whooshing out behind them.
Pretty much everything I’ve shot likes to go slower in the shorter barrels compared to the longer ones. As you know, its not how fast we can send them thats important, its how fast while retaining accuracy thats the trick. 😀

Wok, what kind of groups can you get from it? I guess I need to get a bunch of different pellets, but before I waste the money (as I have no other .177 guns) any suggestions?

I don’t want to expect too much out of it, but I do want to do all that I can do to make it as accurate as it can be. In comparison my 12″ Talon ss (.22) can nail 1/4″ groups and sometimes better at 20 yards with jsb exact 16.1’s.

Tomorrow I will shoot a few groups without the ldc to see if there is any difference in the groups.

Pab, now that where on the subject what speed (with whatever pellet you have experience) do you think would be the best for accuracy out of this 10.1″ barrel? Inquiring mind wants to know 🙂

I can hit 2″ spinners easily with my LD off a tripod at 50 yds easily and it has a 10″ barrel

The length of the barrel shouldn’t really effect the accuracy Joe, just the velocity. Of course, if it was 6 inches then maybe, but 10 odd inches should be fine.
