Q:

2240 and Monsters, a better alternative?

When I first started this 2240 addiction, I was told by several people to stay away from the heavier weight pellets in the 2240. And sure enough, the 14.3’s do seem to reach higher velocity. I now achieve, in my self modded 2240, CO2 powerlet powered, 610 FPS with CPLHP’s. This seems to be a fine killer on California ground squirrels.

I have done the following work by myself on my 2240: the valve opened up by cutting back on the cap threads, the cap drilled out on the inside and recontoured to get more volume and the valve rod thinned for better airflow and the pierceing pin slabsided. I then opened up/recontoured and polished the valve porthole, put in a poly conversion and opened up the barrel gas port, on the barrel which is 14 inches, and installed a Millet redot. I replaced the trigger spring, polished all the bearing surfaces and the hammer has been polished. It has a stock adapter/power adjuster and is using the stock hammer and valve springs.

It also wears a really slick Anthony R metal breech and bolt and aluminum barrel band.

Somewhere on this gun are a few original parts. 😕

I tried replacing the hammer spring with a heavier one and a lighter valve spring, this always resulted in a powerlet getting stuck in the tube, this means a tear down or drilling the end of the dead powerlet and putting a metal screw in the hole to pull it out. Original springs seem to give me the same power without this pain in the ass and the trigger pull is much lighter.

Then I read on the Yellow about a DAQ 25 caliber pistol carbine for sale, quality guns for sure, so I always read the adds on the DAQ.

It was advertised as getting 508 FPS with 20 grain pellets, wow, I thought 💡 , I can do that with my 2240 with a heavier bullet with a better sectional density I think.

So I gathered all my equipment this morning and a tin of 25.4 grain Exact Monsters.

It was cool here, so I wrapped the gun in a 75 F wrap to keep it warm. I set up a target at 25 yards, and shot off of my Caldwell bag.

I got 497 to 501 fps for 12 shots. Five shots went into .53 inches with the red dot. I had to readjust the POI from the 14.3’s which I also shot this morning. They were going 610 FPS and shot about an inch group.

Charigun says that I get better penetration, almost 4 inches and 14 fp of energy as opposed to not quite 2 3/4 inches and almost 12 fp of energy.

I use this gun as a handy car gun and anytime I do not wish to have a rifle, not really for plinking, I have another 2240 for that.

If I wanted to get into the higher energy levels I have to go with the PCP option, which I don’t really want to, I have three AF rilfes for that.

But what this will do, is penetrate a heavier skull, or deeper into the vital area of the medium predators like coyote or raccoon, or a nutria if need be, and it seems to shoot better.

What am I missing here? 😎

Oh okay, thanks for clearing it up for me. I guess I assumed “.25” when I heard “monster”. I get these pellets confused at times. The .25’s are called “kings” 😳

I actually have some of those monsters laying around somewhere. I think I will give em a try.

80,

No, I saw the add on the yellow about a 25 DAQ and tried to see if I could duplicate the claimed performance with a 2240.

I did improve it and actually improved the performance.

DAQ=25 caliber 20 grains@502

Rochcreek=22 25.4@500

And I was trying to see what improvement I could make on the 2240 platform with an Exact Monster instead of a CPLHP, in energy and penetration. The 22, 25 grain has a better than sectional density than either the 20 grain 25 or the 14.3 22 pellets.

Sectional Density is the value given to the force that keep moving things moving, either by interia or maintaining a straight line. It helps us determine if a projectile has a better wind bucking ability and would shoot flatter, and give better penetration in flesh.

In theory, a 25 grain pellet in 22 will fly better than a 25 grain in 25 caliber. In our rifles, being limited to subsonnic flight, the 25 vrs 22 seems to be mitigated by the better energy transfer from the superior frontal area of the 25 over the 22. We see the effects of this in powder burners like the 308 Winchester vrs the 7mm-08.

It gets confusing at times when you add in Ballistic coefficenct. With my little pea sized brain, it always seemed to overlap.

I hope this clears it up. 😉

Good job Roach! So that is a .25 DAQ barrel??? I’m curious to find out what kind of pellets it likes? (I have heard that all his .25 bores varied a bit, and we all know that even an identical bore in two different rifles will respond to ammo in disparate ways…but I am still curious to see what it likes to eat. If you ever do any testing, please post it up. Thanks.

Doesn’t look to me like you’re missing ANYTHING !!

Don’t reckon you’re missing any thing Roach?
Proof is in the pudding as they say, and you seem to have a good pudding 😎

sounds like u got ur act together there RC not bad for a Rookie
