Q:

Shooting and breathing

i was wondering what was going on with my shooting lateley ive been slowing down my breathing a considerable amount which slows down the heart beat i was noticing that my crosshair would start to junp around with my pulse so i was like what the hell is going on here a special came on the history channel the other night about snipers and how they control their heart rate and that the same thing happens to them they pull the trigger between the heart beats along with their breathing does this happen to anybody else going this route has helped me print better groups on paper i went from 2.5in down to 1.5in at 100 yds

see what happens when u get old u mix up the age of ur gun and urself u crotchity old bastard LOL

At 61 I no longer try for perfect groups, often I will take 4 out of 5 and call it good, knowing I am not perfect.

Today I fired the BSA Improved Mdl D at 12 yards using the undersized CPLHP,s that leave little or no rifling marks after firing, but at this time are all that are available.

I fired 20 shots, 18 went into 3/4 of an inch, I called the other two.

So bottom line a 61 year old man using a 98 year old rifle, with iron ironsights, shot a group where 18 or 20 shots went into 3/4 of an inch at 12 yards.

Oh, just one more thing, that was offhand. 😎

Also keep this in mind. You cannot hold perfectly still on the bull. Sometimes you are moving in to the bull on the release and sometimes you will be moving out. Sometimes your pellets will deflect in to the bull, and sometimes they will deflect out (due to manufacturing inconsistencies). Sometimes when your hold is moving out, the pellet will be deflecting in. Other times when you are moving in the pellet will deflect out. Accept variation. It’s a Zen thing and you are the weakest link.

My resting heart rate is below 60 so that helps, if I meditate, before the first string I can get it to the high 40’s. I find that I have to spend a little shoulder time behind the gun before firing the first shot, getting up and checking the target or changing targets means I have to do it all over again almost a dry run if you will.

Having said that, I find that the cheek weld of the AF line is particularly susceptable to heart rate vibration transfer.

So I tend to try and only have but plate and forearm pressure on the gun, and then apply pressure to the trigger as I would a double action pistol, in that almost all pressure is exerted until I can fire between the heart rate. Unless I can do the entire trigger pull from first contact to break without the crosshairs moving, I will not take the shot.

Of course action shooting is different, I use a flash sighting image and break the shot almost unconsciencely, almost the same with offhand shooting, which is really my forte, with offhand shooting, the target image at the time or the trigger break is burned into my memory, as such I can call the shot.

Last night is a good example, shooting the BSA Imparoved Mdl D, I can not find the correct bench technique yet, but I stood and shot offhand and got a 1.5 inch group at 42 yards, I knew this was possible because I have fired that gun at a gong a few hundred times since I got it two days ago and seldom miss offhand.

But then I find bench shooting a waste of my time after obtaining the best working load and pressure et. al, after that almost all of my shooting is done standing, I have been this way for 50 years, it works in the field so much better.

I used to preach to friends that you do not shoot deer off a bench, I preached that to a friend of mine, then on opening morning as he walked up the hill, past my bench, the fucker shot a buck from my bench, go figure.

The wife I spoke of, I found her in a old sealed off mine I was working on with a backhoe, she would not come out until after dark, that was about the time the children started disappearing in the neighboring town..

But gawd could she give deep tissue hickies.

I’ve found that too… I think my gun stock rests on an artery next to my shoulder (not a doc so don’t know) and I get a pulse there. I take deep breaths when loading so that I can slow down when I shoot. I don’t hold my breath but I wait for the bottom of my breath cycle and stop there. If I feel like I’m running out of air I reset.

Another trick that helped me a lot, especially 40yards+, is putting my thumb on the right side of the pistol grip (I’m RH). This stopped me torque / pulling the gun and means my trigger is going straight back instead of to the left/right.

I’m not sure how beer helps but I will try that next.

X3 it doesn’t compute but I was attracted to the cold blooded type!

Sometimes it helps my shooting to think about them. I breath slower and deeper and don’t think about when… just here goes one for what should have been.

Happens to us all.

I do exactly what the snipers do and i breathe in 2 times and exhale but on the 3rd breath, i let out half of it and gently squeeze my trigger.

Its all in the breathing, and trigger pull.

The other BAD THING to do is to hold the shot too long before you squeeze the trigger. There is no such thing as perfectly still cross hairs unless you put the gun in a vise.

If she does not has a heart, how did you guys ended up married?

The females are tricky little bitches Don…lol….

rj, you will see some shooters wear jackets to reduce the effects of their
pulse on the gun… It is a big deal….. I would like to know how much one has
to move the barrel to cause a 1/4″ flier at 100yds…. Just imagine a sniper
shooting 500-1000yds… No room for error…..

My exwife didn’t have a heart.

I am not kidding dude, some poeples heart on the right, mostly on the left side. My ex wife heart on the right.

Are you smoking and drinking coffee a lot, that also made your heart beating fast and hard.

im right handed and my heart is in the center of my chest

Are you left handed or right handed?

Is your heart on the left or right?

If you heart on the same side as the gun, that may affects your shooting.

Take in a breath, let out half of it, squeeze the trigger so slowly that you are surprised when it goes off. That helps me.
