Q:

brigeport miller lube info ?

Hi fellas ,
Any of you lot got a bridgeport vari speed miller ? Im looking for info on how to lube the vari drive . Fired my new toy up yesterday for the first time and its a bit rumbly in the head . Hoping its just a bit dry and wants a bit of lube .
The side plate says
remove 5/16 set screw “A” from side of vari drive
And
Remove 5/16 set screw “B” from lower rear section of vari drive

I havn`t got a manual for it and I havn`t got a clue where set screw “A +B ” are 🙄

Heres a pic of it just after delivery 🙂

I went for a digital 5hp inverter http://www.drivesdirect.co.uk/Products/Digital_Inverters240_415.htm
Quite expensive @ £650 /$1037 but it seams to work realy well 🙂 Its plug and play so easy to wire up etc

great machine , i have one almost the same , same old power feed to ,( keep it oild)
i put a static capasitor in for mine insted of 3phase , and it has worked great , $89 well spent .
good luck with it .

Cheers fella 😉
Ive joined the practical machinists forum and ordered a manual off ebay 🙂

Ive not run the machine with the head in any other position than vertical sofar . I had to drop the head over to get it to go under the garage door but its now sat back up right .

The noise changes quite a bit with speed changes but even running it slow it rumbles . Blod`s belt speed change version has the head bearings going and mine sounds as bad or slightly worse than his does .
Its been stood for a few months in my garage and Ive no idea how long it was stood unused before I bought it so I`m hoping everything is dry and a bit of lube will quiet it down some . All the bed was creaking and groaning but a bit of lube has made it nice and sweat again 🙂
Worst case I guess its a bearing change which will be a pain cos Ive been waiting months for the garage to be rewired upto standard so the 3 phase inverter doesn`t melt my wiring and I`m gagging to have a play .
Upside is I payed next to nothing for the machine so a few £`s on bearings isnt the end of the world just more delays in getting it working properly .

Nut shot did you run it with the head tilted like in the picture if you did they are always noisy in that position mainly do to the spindle in the head likes to move around allot, more than in normal 0 head postion, if you did run it that way straighten out the head it will get much better. I can’t recall the lube points but do go to the forum suggested I bought a South Bend lathe and they were a big help on questions I had, just join it’s easy and post a question! you will have answers very soon to tell you where to lube it and take care of it 😯

The variable speeds are louder than the pulley heads. At higher speeds if not adjusted can sound like a cement mixer with little ill effect Try A Guide to Renovating the Bridgeport 2J Variable Speed Milling Machine. I got it on Ebay.. Look for a manual too for the lube points.

Cheers Fella 😉 That looks a very handy forum .
