10 shot groups at 285 yards with the 257 Haley Scadalous
Today I shot the Haley using unlubed, 257420 bullets that were cast from one cavity only and that cavity has been marked with a punch to give a reference mark so I can index them to the sizing die and then to the rifle.
But then I got distracted and forgot to index them in the sizing die. 😳
But I did index them to the rifle.
I was shooting tethered to 3 66 cf tanks and regulated to 4300 PSI, 40 degee F and almost no wind.
My wife knocked my electronic scale off my bench and broke it, so I can’t weigh my bullets, as a result I shot 12 shot groups and repainted the two most extreme bullets from each group.
I shot 10 shot groups so that I could learn and compare. I have said that three and five shots groups don’t tell you much as far as alloy, lube, hold sensitivity and fill pressure. They can tell you field shot count and how it relates to hunting accuracy tho, but I was not after that.
I also did not sight directly to 285 yards, but was 21 MOA low at that range to keep the Leupold more towards being optical centered, so I was holding on the 21 MOA mark in the scope.

First group came in at 7 inches for 10 shots
Last group of the day was 5.5 inches for 10 shots

Charlie, It would be nice to see those bullets coming in with a slow speed camera on the target, like Ted does on his site. That should be your next purchase if you don’t already have one. I’d be interested in seeing those “flyers” in motion….

Still not as bad as Air gun Advice though. Hell, I got booted off that forum for suggesting that Dry Nitrogen worked fairly well. You would have though I was suggesting powering an Air Gun with exploding Crack mixed with Nitro. 👿 🙄
I shot today with the 257420 bullets lubed with moly, from a recently cleaned barrel at 3800 PSI in 30 degree weather.
I removed the muzzle break for this test.
The routine is to cast in the morning, wait for the afternoon sun to shine on the target frame so I can see my bullet strikes, paint the target and commence to shooting.
I fired 2 10 shot groups, each group had a bullet that deviated far from the main group and in the same place, that shot was painted out in each group so these are 9 for 10 each.
Velocity was 1110 FPS.
I adjusted from my 40 yard zero to get on the target frame and shot the first group.
I made the adjustment for the 2nd group, the first two shots were with a center hold and they went low, the next 8 were holding on the top of the gong with a hold at 9 Oclock at times for the variable wind and was more or less centered on the gong.
The wind was blowing in estimated gusts of 2 to6 mph. Left to right and uphill and down hill, in otherwords all four corners of the compass.
The fresh paint on the target is painting out the major grey streaks of lead that result when the bullets spatters on the steel, but as you can see I did not get them all.

Hey RC, If you really want to get the yellow guys in a feeding frenzy, just mention that you were shooting a Boss 30 cal pellet gun from a 30 degree angle and were hitting a crossing sign at 288 yards! 😆

I posted this lead spatter post on the Yellow and got chewed out about how it is a super fund hazard.

Still looking forward to playing with the .257 that Doug is getting ready for me. The 3000 psi mark will get me more “play time” than the 4000 psi mark will.
Collateral damage.
I have a Rubbermaid stool sitting at the base of my 285 yard target frame.
I have notice since getting the Haley that it is getting holes in it from the lead splatter.
The stool is made of .14 inch plastic and the splatter is cutting right thru it. Luckily I have not lost a paint can as of yet.

Not to HOG up RC’s post but, in response to what you said about keeping it too 100-150 yards, YOU MIGHT WANNA RECONSIDER THAT STATEMENT….LOL!
The above posted drop chart was printed off G7 with the correct bc for the velocity that i’m pushing. If you will notice, at 300 yards the bullet is still going 772+ fps and has 98 retained FPE! Basically, RJ and RC’s bullet is probable still going about 875-900 fps at that range 😯
So now, even at 900 fps and using a 50 yard zero, you would need a scope with an additional 55 MOA and your set….lol!

A little more information on the air usage.
I had a fill level of 4400 PSI on the three 66’s, my regular output read 4000 after about 60 or 70 shots.

You can do it with a single 44 or bigger tank without a regulator, but it will be a continual diminishing air pressure situation.
The good thing about doing it that way, is you can see which air pressure is the “sweet spot” air pressure by watching your groups and how the air pressure goes down.
Or you can get a booster if you can find one and that will solve a lot of air porblems.
Just takes money.

Nice shooting and seeing those three tanks tethered like that made me realize why I sold my .457 JH. And it is also making me question why I want a .257 JH 😯 I don’t like the fact that Extreme range requires Extrem air and or regulation for consistency…oh yeah, I also sold my regulator 😕
Might just have to resign myself to be happy with my .257 condor from Doug and enjoy the 100 to 150 yard range! 😎

I have a Handy cam, but I think it is not quite good enough for this sort of stuff.
I also have a Cannon 60D that might work, but the wife sleeps with it under her pillow if that tells you anything.
John Bowman told me if you paint the bases of the bullets white, they are easy to see when you shoot, a camera set up that would allow you to track them from the hooters perspective would be cool.
But right now I am dealing with about all I can just to shoot sort of good groups.
