100 yard Sub MOA with the TD257
Went out this weekend for a lil shooting/hunting. The wind picked up to a speed faster than what the weatherman said it would be:evil: WHAT’S NEW right? My plans were to coyote hunt in the morning the do a mid day jack rabbit hunt. But after the winds picked up and shooting groups, i called it a day. I did manage to pop one Jack Rabbit though with the 257 before i called it quits.
I had been wanting to finally get my TalonDor 257 to shoot a 100 yard Sub MOA group and i finally got it. I usually set my power wheel on 5-8 ALL THE TIME but for this group, i turned it down one full revolution to 4-8 and filled to 3200 psi. I wasn’t thinking though that the lower setting would print my groups LOW! But that’s ok, it’s all about the groups GIRTH (LOL) not were it impacts 😆 The group was shot untethered as i don’t own a regulator yet:
I then set up my AR500 steel spinner at 150 yards to see if i could repeat the group size by keeping it under 1.5″. I also switched the power wheel back to 5-8 for this shooting as it was a bit of a further stretch. At 150 yards, the bullet impacts at my scopes 4th lowest mildot. The first shot at the top left of the spinner was a sighter/test shot and i was overthinking about doping the wind and the shot went high left. But after confirmation, i placed the 4th mildot on the bottom center of the steel spinner. Group was 1.6″. Just over MOA:

Other than Jerrys slugs, ive only shot pellets.
Where I hunt the average distance is 65 or more yards. I can dope the wind pretty well to 80 but after that its tough. I think I get all you could expect from pellets. Ive shocked quite a few rimfire shooters out in the field when i make shots they cant.
Probably would be a good idea to stay with pellets in 90% of my area. Most hunting is done on neighbors properties with outbuildings and livestock nearby.
But your posts about this stuff definitley has my attention. 😉
That is a some seriously shooting, well done! There was a time where I spent every available minute of my day shooting 100m groups. Over a year I did roughly 4000 5 shot groups and only a handful of them were worth fussing over.
It becomes addictive constantly chasing that perfect group. I agree, pellets and consistent groups at long range don’t work as well as bullets do. Bullets being 25gr Jsb’s and 30gr Piledrivers in .22 here in SA with our caliber restriction . I’ve had much better results with the latter.
My favorite past time now is picking a target (starling, rocky, etc) at 100m+ and firing a single shot that’ll bring it down. That’s even more addictive.

LOL….close to a 3/4″ group isn’t stacking em? WOW, you guys are getting tougher and tougher to entertain. Got more work to do on the gun before i’m TOTALLY satisfied though.
And remember, Powder Burner Manufacturers JUST THIS YEAR started giving 1/2 MOA at 100 yard guarantees.

Tofazfou, with all your range time and shooting skills, long range shots with various guns ect. You now have an ultimate weapon of your choosing and you are not stacking bullets at that distance yet, I want to see some nice 1/2 inch groups on your next report, and where are the movies I am missing out on this so called Big California Jack Rabbit, you know I cannot give you a confirmed kill until you provide a picture, I figure if I give you about three weeks maybe you can produce some kills with your new gun, and stack a couple bullets at a 100 YRDS. That is if you leave your gun alone or do not attempt to make another one. Hehehehehehe, Michael
Yeah I have noticed this year alone there have been way more posts about long range shooting. Guess I will have to go extend my range another 20 yards and get her to 100 =)
LOL, no offense taken Riff. But it is about what current airguns can do as opposed to pellets vs bullets.
I also shoot in the wind about 99% of the time im shooting. So remember this, my results are shot in the wind.
Bullets will always hold the overall edge over an efficiency wasting pellet. Especially far out. Hell, up close too. While some guns/shooter/pellets can shoot out to 100-130 yards and make dime sized groups, the further away, the bullet will have the accuracy/power advantage. RARELY is it a windless day in any state or country on this planet.
TODAY, i see more DIME SIZED groups at 100 yards than i’ve ever seen for an airgun. Seems like everyone can now shoot SUB MOA with pellets. Especially when 7 years ago, it was, “THAT’s IMPOSSIBLE”. Actually, seems like all of a sudden THIS year, everyone can shoot sub MOA with pellets.

Of course there wasn’t a hint of wind, the river was like glass that day. Once the ripples started to appear, the groups weren’t worth taking note of.
Maybe one day Ill have to take the plunge into casting my own, it looks like a rewarding hobby when stuff works out.

On a side note, I need a slightly stronger than stock spring. But not much stronger. Were in heck do I find one?

about 900 fps in speed and i too don’t get much power difference when adjusting the PW 1 full rotation in or out from were the norm setting is. But i know its because the gun is pretty much maxed out already. So when the valve does open, you don’t get any real change when you play with the power wheel. It might only USE MORE AIR but give you no power advantage. use the factory springs though and you will probably see major FPS differences when adjusting the PW. I can go from 4-8 on the first shot then set the PW at 8-8 and i still get 900. But if i start out at 8-8, my first shot will be like 925 or so and drop steadily from there.
Should have a quick little video up of it soon. I got the rabbit on video and i shot the steel spinner on video and well as blasting other crap at 150 yards.
And i agree with Doug, i’m never getting rid of this gun. YOU HEAR THAT RJ….lol! I was on the verge of selling it for parts/scrap. What a mistake that would have been.

You are 100% right and very smart. Like what you said about sticking with pellets for 90% of your shooting is the very reason why i have multiple guns at a WIDE range of FPE. I have guns that can reach out a little (for an airgun) and touch something. Then i have loud ones that are just ok but fun too shoot. Then i have whisper quiet ones that i would only use out to 75 yards max and are laser accurate.
Your statement is exactly why i have pretty powerful guns. I live in the desert and the majority of my CLOSE SHOTS is 50 yards minimum and it goes way out from there. It’s the desert. Its the way it is out west. So like you, i tune/select my guns to reach out to the distances i find most of my game. A jack rabbit might run right from under you feet while your walking and he might not stop running till he is 125+ yards in front of you on a hillside. And you’d better have the offhand skill and gun to make that shot or he is a gonner.
Since getting into big bores a long time ago, i’ve realized the advantage of BULLETS in airguns. Pellets are awesome. They work. Nothing wrong with them at all if you shoot them the way they are designed (sub sonic and close range). But when you really wanna reach out and do it accurately and with authority, Bullets are the way to go. Jerry’s slugs are just that also…..SLUGS. Waaaaaay Better than pellets i think at long range stuff.
Pellets have skirts, slugs and bullets don’t….lol (OK, no one can use that, i just coined a phrase)
