1065 yds-Longest Distance Ever, To Hit Target, Air Powered-.

Kind of LONG, But tells story of that day. For any who THINK IT WAS EASY!

Yes I did it, Broke the 1000 yd distance with and air gun. The LONGEST “KNOWN” DISTANCE EVER TO HIT A TARGET WITH AIR POWER. AND A ¼” dia. bullet, 257”. I also exceeded the 1000 yd ranges absolute distance ….If you watch video and at end for the distance VIEW, look carefully and BEYOND the number boards of 1000 yds, just over the top is the berm/backstop bank 50 yds beyond, for the 24 shooting positions. My target is 15 yds beyond that up in the white triangle sloped bank to the left, with the white steel plate, and is 39” wide. A regulation NRA target is 72” x 72”, and I am little over ½ that size… Shooting from the 1000 yd shooting benches on firing line.

Set up, how it broke down….I first put up the steel plate in a cleared/raked spot at the end of the range and started this at 800 yds. I used a portable table to get my yardage distances back from plate. With my Plate 65 yds beyond the Ranges target frames, and I went back from my 905 yd half mile + video, I would have to set up 65 yds in front of the 1000 yd concrete benches for a 1000 yd shot. I said forget that, I will just set up on concrete bench and distance would be 1065 yds, and GO FOR IT ALL……This is what I did. Any longer distances, and I would have to set up portable table in the PARKING LOT.

That morning was tough…Up till then each 100 yd increase in distance I raised the scope rail the appropriate “guess”, using ballistic charts and several BC calculations, and had worked pretty well through 905 yds…I figured I needed an additional 30 MOA to get 1065 yds, from my 905 yd settings….WRONG!!

My buddy was with me this trip and we had radio’s, HIS…. Got set up ready to fire. Don’t put plate down range, until I can fire and either myself or buddy with my spotting scope see dust for correct elevation, hitting in the prepped dirt area. I fired and fired and saw NO DUST…..I aimed high, and higher, then low in the clearing and no dust….Then we saw dust at top of the clearing one shot. Aimed lower and varied aim point and nothing…Couldn’t believe it…Never had quite this much trouble before……..Then another dust cloud but nothing afterwards……Tried and tried……I was about ready to quit…..My buddy said drive me down and I’ll get behind the concrete pit wall, and see if I can see any hits………I drive him down and came back……I fired several shots and NOTHING………I figured I MUST BE LOW, so aimed above the cleared space a LOT……Radio says, I think I saw a weed move way LOW, try again……Did same thing and he tells me I hit a weedy bushy thing and fired a few more and was way low…I couldn’t SEE what he was talking about so I DRIVE DOWN AGAIN……..He shows me where IT was hitting…Dang like 20 ft LOW into weeds!! The several shots we DID SEE BEFORE with DUST, turned out to be RICOCHET’S that skipped upwards into our impact area and we wasted a lot of bullets, AIR and TIME!!!……I says get in, I have to drive back, remove scope and rail, and adjust way up on rear, so you can relax back at the line and have a snack…………I take the rail and scope off, put another 40 MOA in and re-mount all and start all over……. I had approximately 275 MOA for these shots and past the 900 yds the MOA really starts adding up. The Ballistic Charts are WRONG at these slow speeds. Friend using my 20-60×80 spotting scope, and I could see too with rifle scope. Fired a few more and finally on the correct MIL-DOT, we see dust fly…Fired several more on the correct mil dot that got me in middle of the dirt area. OK, let’s go AGAIN DOWN and set up the white steel plate.. …Drive down, back up the hill, set up plate, the camera on tripod, and turn on…drop him at the pit wall, 65 yds from the plate, and he has binoculars to spot the hits and a radio. DANG, I am tired by this time………..Hey, 74 yrs old gets like this!!

Fired a few to right of plate to get dust at middle of plate, or close for elevation……Fired ON PLATE, the radio says a hit, and he tells where on plate…..Get 5 on plate and that last one is in the bulls-eye, and I radio back. I am DONE and TIRED. WE DID what I set out to do all summer, find how far it COULD go…. (Hits WITH AIR-1000 yds+), the line is cold and driving down to pick up……My friend was walking to plate as I was driving up the hill to target , camera still running, and he walked in front of target and gave me the SIGNAL of “YEAH”, pointing to the bulls-eye hit? I left it in video. We were only ones there that morning.

Gun is with GUNSMITH for serious modifications as of 11/18/15, to HOPEFULLY correct a vertical shifting problem I still have….If it is successful, next season will be for much better accuracy at distance!!!
