Q:

12" un shrouded vs 24" un shrouded

Is there a big sound difference between a Talon SS with a 12″ barrel with no shroud vs a 24″ barrel? My SS now is whisper quiet just would like to know how much louder it would be with a 24″ barrel. Or should I say how much louder would it be with the baffles out vs a 24″ barrel.

I will update my chrony results and accuracy results with about 4 or 5 different pellets I’ll have by then. Also the 2 extra inches of volume added to the inside of my barrel shroud made the gun freakishly quiet. And on top of that, I will receive my new longer shroud in a day or two. After I put that on I will concentrate on the slap modded hammers. The gun really shoots as good or better than I need it to so the only other thing left to do is make it as quiet as possible. So basically I will have a RLshroud made for the escape with 24in barrel on my escapeUL with 16in barrel. The shroud will have 8 cups in it plus the extra 2in from the shorter barrel. This thing is going to be silent compared to stock.

Keep us posted. I am thinking of getting a .25 barrel in the future.

I just cut 2 inches off my 18 inch barrel last night. I also put a crown in the barrel after cutting and got it installed late last night. I got home in time to shoot some before it got dark this evening. I can honestly say that my groups are tighter and i did not notice any pellet spiraling like i did when the barrel had the choke. I also shot a handful of the H&N Grizzly pellets and they are definitely grouping great now at 50yds. I will chrony my gun this weekend to see just how many fps i lost with cutting the barrel but i doubt it will be all that much.

So if you have a choked barrel and it works with your pellet then that is just as good as not having it cut off ?

:hoot:

So it would seem! A lot of shooters are quite satisfied with their choked barrels.

Exactly right!

A choke on a barrel makes a “one barrel fits all” for the vast assortment of pellets we have available today. That makes life a lot simpler for the manufacturer.

I am going to be buying a .257 barrel soon and was thinking about cutting the choke off my escape ul before getting the new barrel. I agree with Hoot. Once you figure out what pellet your barrel likes than the choke probably isn’t that important and I think most manufacturers choke the barrel because there are soo many different pellets that the user will want to try that the choke helps calm most down.

interesting Hoot. ive been wanting to remove the choke part of my original barrel but im not sure what would happen with the accuracy with pellet. so far it shoots well with pellets especially king of course. but ultimately what i wanna shoot is heavier slugs. so far ive been experimenting with the slugs instead of the barrel as its hard to come by. anyone here removed their choke on af barrel?

If the barrel is properly sized, and you are using the right diameter pellet, which is determined by trial and error, you don’t need an obstruction/complression at the end of the barrel. One of the best tuners I was in contact with several years ago once told me he tuned for a champion pcp field target shooter and was told he obtained much better accuracy, especially over long distances, after he removed the choked end of the barrel.

I’m not certain what function, beyond ensuring all sizes of skirt diameter will make contact with the rifling, that a choked end serves. Note the Smooth Twist barrels…they are “choked” wherein the only rifling is at the very end of the barrel.

It follows that it doesn’t take much “twist” to get the pellet spinning up to a stable speed, to ensure accuracy. I believe it’s better to find the right diameter pellet to begin with and forget about the “one barrel shoots all…” philosophy, and shoot what fits right to begin with.

That’s why some guns won’t shoot certain pellets worth a damn. The barrel’s diameter doesn’t properly match the pellet diameter…it’s amazing what a thousandth or two of an inch can make in correctly matching a pcp to the proper pellet.

Those are my thoughts and not everyone will agree. I’ve removed choked ends off multiple barrels and never could see any loss of accuracy. In fact, once I found the particular pellet that barrel preferred, they all turned into tack hammers!

Your milage may vary….

Kind regards,

I don’t like choked barrels. Removing that last two inches was an easy decision for me.

Hoot:

Why don’t you like a choked barrel? Is it because it slows the pellet too much?

And the hammer slap can be quieted down a little also.

I have thought much on this particular subject myself. I have an 18 inch .25 barrel I have been wanting to put in mine. I am thinking of machining it down to 16 inch so as to have a little space for some baffling to take the edge off of the muzzle blast. I do not need it to be silent, but I would like to not feel like I needed hearing protection when I shot it.

You will get much better performance with the 24 inch barrel, but unless you do something about that muzzle blast, everyone for a good distance around is going to know when you pull the trigger.

Any time the barrel is outside the frame, away from baffles, ldc’s, or any other sound muffling devices, the Talon SS will be as loud as a rifle. The length of the barrel makes no difference in the sound made when the gun is fired…a 12″ would be as loud as a 24″ or an 18″, etc. etc…

The Talon SS is quiet because the barrel has several baffles in the frame that slows the air pressure before the discharge exits the end cap. Thus the “blast” noise is muffled. Add an ldc to the frame and baffles, and the Talon SS can be made dead silent, except for the hammer slap.

Hoot:

That’s what I want to hear. It is just some people say the SS is too loud to use. If the talon SS is too loud to shoot in your yard because of people next door your yard is too small to shoot in. If I stand 20 feet away and have the wife shoot the SS is sounds like a heavy foot step if that. So would you say with a 24″ barrel its as loud as a 18″ barrel.

:hoot:

Why a 24″ barrel?

A 16″ barrel will fit in the frame and leave room for a slide in LDC which is way quieter than baffles alone?

An unbaffled, unvented, stick out of the frame 24″ barrel will sound like a .22 rifle.
