.177 condor with .25 tank

I am building my own .177 18 inch barrel for my condor with a barrel from a gun I don’t use anymore. My Condor is normally .25 caliber and the product details listed for the Condor on PA state that a different tank is used for the .177 to prevent air dump. Does anyone know if I can get away with using my high flow spinlock tank for my .25? I was thinking possibly shims behind the top hat might be the answer. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

Thanks for all the great tips! I think I am going to stay at .25 for a while and should be getting my .357 barrel in a few weeks. The .177 barrel I made shot so low even at 20 yards that I had the scope adjusted all the way and still could not bring the POI onto a sheet of paper. It was just a cheep Chinese barrel so I had nothing to lose and was a good way to do my first “gunsmithing” project at home.

how far out is your top hat ,and what pressure was in your tank from start of shooting to finish when it dumped .

seems like with 177 and the high flow valve , with the light return spring in the valve, you need rebound for the top hat to close the valve, you had the power wheel high , which tended to hold the top hat open longer for more velocity,
you said velocity was low at start, this indicates high bottle pressure, so you turned the power valve up to gain velocity.

it shot ok for a bit then dumped, this is when your bottle pressure came down enough to not close the valve quick enough to keep the valve from staying open, and dumping .

the pressure in the tank was not great enough compared to the back pressure form the 177 cal tube.

i have not set up a 177 yet , but i would think that , to get the top hat closed quicker , you need to lower the power wheel , maybe to 4 or so , turn your top out to increase the velocity . with the oring to help close the valve quicker.

not sure about tank pressure with this set up.i would try moderate tank pressure first, say 2200 or so.

if no one has tried this its trial and error, but i would think that it can be done.

did you make sure the pellets were seated deep in the barrel.

with the higher back pressure of 177, makes it a different tune than with a 22, which is all my experience ,

i have had tank dump with my set up with 32 grain eunjins, my valve return spring is lightened compared to factory set up, with ported valve. i believe i had the power wheel all the way up , and no oring.at about 2800 psli in tank.

i think that tune is now , pw 8, oring , top hat gap .100 , tank pressure 2500 for short string of 20 or so shots for best accuracy in the high 900’s , ending with 2100 psi in tank for shot string.

for longer shot string , 3000 fill,pw 10 , start 970’s rise to 1013 for 15 shots, then start back down for another 15 , back to the 970’s again.

any way i have wanted to get a 177 barrel to play with just never have, with the talons, etc, they use higher power wheel settings for velocity, because of the lower hammer weight,

you have heavy hammer and high flow valve, so i’m thinking less power wheel , less tank pressure, and fine tune with top hat, with oring.

So I pumped it back up, installed an o-ring, and went back to shooting with power wheel on 4. The problem was, I was not happy with the way it was shooting at this power level. It was very slow and no accuracy. I started turning it up and began grouping better I think just under supersonic, (I don’t have a chrony), then the tank dumped again.
1. Removed .177 barrel
2. Reinstalled .25 barrel
3. Pumped gun back up
4. Went shooting 50 and 75 yards
5. Smile!

I will make a log of how many shots I get next time I go out. The co2 adapter works will with .177 caliber 18″ barrel.

Would you mind keeping a log of how many shots you get with your Micrometer tank and .177? Really would like build myself a Talon in .177 just for indoor shooting.

Guys, if you can regain your composure quick enough with a tank dump, you can reach up and push the breech forward and have a lot less loss of air.

and like was already mentioned, try an oring behind the top hat and see if you can get away with shooting the 177 with the high flow set up.

Yeap, tank dump sucks big when all you have is a hand pump. have done that a few times. best bet is grab a tasty beverage and pump then enjoy a break then pump some more. after my 2nd one in the same night I quite till the next day. Good luck dude. let us know how the build works out.

So I finished my barrel, installed it with the stock hammer spring, stock top hat, and left out the hammer weight. The rifle was shooting great! Supersonic with 10gr pellets, then….. tank dumped all air. Really sucks when I only have a hand pump! I will try the o-ring.

It will work. I use an o ring to do just this. .177 12″ w/ .25 tank. It WILL tank dump w/o restricting the tophat travel. I get +80 shots from 3K down to 1.5Kpsi. PW set to 4.
