.177 shorty & 25. shorty…..
Ok ok…..
so we have the .177 short Taipan which no one has yet.
And the soon to be out 25. short Taipan.
I have never had a .177 pcp gun before. And I was thinking of getting a 25. shorty.
But I think what I use the puppy for, it may be too hot of a gun for me too use.
And I really don’t want a standard size Taipan 22. because the shorty is perfect. At under 23 inches long.
OK you guys with the 22 & .177 guns what ever the make.
How do you like shooting the .177’s does it shoot any flatter than the 22 guns? :4:
And if it does, too what range.
I would like too hear the pro’s & con’s of the .177’s.
Thx :biggrinn:

Well the gun is nearly as quiet stock as my Prod with a moderator (but it is really silent)- the pellet impacts not so much and it varies widely. The mutant has little hammer noise.
I shot a chipmunk the other day and the pellet went right through him and made a loud nasty ricochet noise on a flat rock behind him. No stopping that. I would maybe change the moderator out for carbon fiber just for aesthetics. 😛 Between the fancy walnut stock I love and a carbon fiber moderator – I am not sure I could afford that gun.
That Mutant must be Dead quiet at 800fps
Oh yea Sammy…
I’m wanting a Taipan puppy, so I’m good with that. :biggrinn:
I was hoping you would chime in Soda, I know u have a .177 compact cricket.
I’m after field use, with the .177 I’m not a paper puncher, but I do plan, punching holes in fur
and feathers real soon.
Thx 4 sharing with the class, on the subject of the .177 good info. :biggrinn:
Those are just the published averages which are close enough for this discussion. You won’t see much wind differences with how close the BC’s at shorter ranges I shoot (under 60 yards).
The 18.1s are deadly accurate at 50 yards and under. Not sure about higher ranges although I have a few shots at 75 yards. On paper the shorty just squeaks out my Compact Cricket on accuracy (maybe 1/8″ inch difference) but maybe it is the better trigger or the tougher thicker pellets or my inconsistent sorting or who knows. We are splitting hairs and talking about 3/8″ groups for both at 50 yards when everything is perfect. No vermin can tell the difference.
Great post coda, very enlightening. How is the accuracy of the 18,1gr at 800fps and at what distance did you calculate that BC or is it the suggestion from chairgun?
My situation may be unique. I live in a valley that is often near windless and in heavy woods with high hills. Shots beyond 60 yards are occasional. I have a covered private deck off of my master bedroom with two shooting rests and also shoot out the door from a Caldwell Deadshot if it is too cold or too hot. Most of my shooting is squirrels, chipmunks, ground hogs (few), raccoons, starlings, sparrows in significant numbers, and a few pigeons. For everything but the ground hogs and raccoons I really don’t find any difference in accuracy or lethality shooting the 18.1 JSBs at 800 FPS from the Shorty Mutant and 10.34 JSBs at 900 FPS from the Compact Cricket although there is about a 4-5 FPE advantage to the .22. Both are over 20 FPE at the muzzle and a similar BC. I use my 30 cal Edgun for raccoons and ground hogs anyways at 75 FPE.
I don’t notice any wind differences but I don’t see much wind and the .22s have only a very slight edge in BC over the heavy .177 10.34 (.033 vs .031) that I use in the Compact Cricket.
While a larger bore is more efficient the .177 still uses a tiny bit less air per shot (but at a lower FPE). The Compact gets more shots but both are more than adequate. There is a $2 per tin pellet cost difference if that matters. If you are shooting longer ranges a lot (I have shot plenty of sparrows at over 75 yards with the .177 which I consider near its useful range limit) I might go with the .22 18.1 or I also would if I was using a lighter .177 pellet than the 10.34. There is more overlap than many like to admit for shorter ranges. If I was on a farm shooting longer ranges and with a lot of wind than a .22 is it or even a .25. The only right answer, of course, is to own both. 😉
If your going with a 177 I recommend getting a pup with a magazine that the pellets goes straight in. Mags like the Marauder or most of the FX models that have to be turned each pellet I find to be a PITA especially in 177.
The mag system I recommend. IMO it makes shooting a lot more fun: https://youtu.be/I-4XHoRC4Gs
All good points guys thx.
That’s kind of what I’ve been told, that the little .177 pellets can get pushed around by the wind. I guess I’ll try too keep my shots 50 yards & under.
What I like is it shoots flat. I’ve had a few 25’s in the past, but you get too a point where
you find out, what works better for you, and the setting in which you use it.
The 25. is better when you are hunting in the woods, or desert. Where you don’t have too think about a miss, or a 31gr pellet blowing though a target doing 50 + fpe.
Different tools, for different, applications & in different settings.
I want a new puppy, I think, I’ll give the little .177 a try, least I know now the .177 can drop crows, shot placement will be key. :biggrinn:
I believe this is because you are shooting the 10.34 at <20 ft/lbs, at this setting the 8.44 should perform better.
I use the 10.34 only at higher settings (20+ ft/lbs) in order to have a flat trajectory.
And I fully agree about the wind affecting the .177 seriously and therefore not being a long range outdoor tool.
I shot only indoors so don’t care about wind.
so we have the .177 short Taipan which no one has yet.
And the soon to be out 25. short Taipan.

177’s I have shoot 18 – 20 fpe with 10 grain pellets and are accurate out to 45 – 50 yards. After 50 yds a 3 – 5 mph wind starts effecting accuracy, 10 – 12 mph and my 177’s are no fun to shoot past 40 yards. My 22 is shooting 32 fpe and the same 3- 5 mph wind doesn’t effect accuracy till about 75 yards. 10 – 12 MPH I can hit what I am aiming at most of the time at 55 yds.
The above 177’s do not shoot any flatter than the 22. In fact after 45 – 50 yards I have to hold over less with the 22 cal. All my guns are zeroed at 30 yards. I really enjoy shooting the 177’s especially at 45 yards and closer. 177 is great for rats, chippers, mice and pest birds(I have taken a few ravens at 40 – 45 yards). At 50 and closer a 177 is great for target practice/plinking but if I could only have one high end PCP it would be a 25. Second choice a 22 cal then a 177.
Given only those two caliber options. If you shoot “mostly” paper/target practice inside of 50 yds and want quiet and shot count, I say go with the .177. For everything else I’d go with the .25 when it’s available.
I’m surprised it has taken this long for the .25 to come out.
Most of the time they just fold up like a bad poker hand.
Oh that’s right miksatx Tony hooked you up with a super nice puppy.
They are sweet guns Taipans. I saw your post.
Syclone that looks like fun hunting Godzilla with a bullpup.
Where r you at? 🙄
I live in Puerto Rico and we have an iguana infestation and have be declared a plague.
Yea Donny is the best, he had too keep his wife happy, if he wanted too shoot in the house.
So that’s how he got started, making them.
Good to know tsakula, that’s what I aim for high chest shot.

I hunt iguanas and will be looking for the 25cal shorty with one of Donny’s widgets which will be whisper quiet and just the right length. :8:

You could get some 3M carbon fiber wrap.
