Q:

18" .257 barrel, Extreme valve, 60gr Lyman w/ 4500psi Tank ?

I did a lot of reading, but I could not find out what to expect from the combination of R&L’s 18″ .257 barrel, Extreme valve and 4500psi tank, shooting modified Lyman (gas-check milled off) 60 grain bullets. I know, Doug Noble’s valve and milled barrel is the way to go with a .257, if you have that kind of money, and that the barrel should be 28″ or longer. However, I’d still like to know what kind of results the combination that I’m asking about will produce. Also, from the wording on R&L’s .257 barrel page I can’t tell if all barrels now come with lead or if you have to request it. I believe that I read somewhere that it’s best to do your own lead, for the bullet that you expect to shoot through the barrel.

Now that I cannot answer. I’ve heard mixed reviews on that.

Thanks, RJ-Porter! So, can these .257 cal barrels still effectively shoot pellets, with a lower power valve (I’m sure that the Extreme valve is too hot) ?

RandL barrels are drop-in barrels. The lease in is already done. When he says lap the barrel he means polish the bore with either a Wheeler fire lapping kit or jb bore paste.

Thank you for taking the time to make sure that I understand. I see that what I thought that I knew, was all wrong. I’ll research this further, so that I have a more thorough understanding of what’s going on. I really do appreciate you efforts, Gippeto!

Perhaps a picture?

Ok, my understanding of what you’re saying is that the leade is the portion of barrel that you’ll remove all of the rifling “lands” from, which leads to where the rifling begins and this is not to be confused with the slight champher given to the beginning of the leade, which removes the square edge, thus facilitating ease of loading?

Went to their website and looked up the barrel you’re talking about…helpful bugger when I want to be. 🙂

They advertise the barrel as a “drop in”…then suggest it should be lapped. 🙄

As a “drop in”, the leade SHOULD be already done.

The leade is the transition from chamber to rifling btw….not a relief leading into the chamber to ease loading…refer to first post. 😉

LOL! Ok, so spelling is not my forte. Thanks, for the spelling lesson and subtle bump!

I prefer to lead my own barrels…that’s the fun part after all. 😎 Typically if they come with lead, I’ll clean them before using.

If you don’t know what a leade is…the possibility exists that you might be better off letting someone else do it. :butkick:
