Q:

18 vs 24 (again)

Please humor a newbie;

I have lurked for quite a while and have had a TSS for over a year now. I think I have read every post here on 18 vs 24 inch barrels in .22. I am wanting to stretch her legs a little more than I do now. There is a little over 100 yds behind the house to shoot and want to use all of it! (don’t waste good range space!) I have no trouble busting charcoal briquets at 50 yds but much past that and it starts to get iffy on small targets.

I really prefer the look and I assume better balance of the 18, but if I can’t consistently drill what I’m aiming for at that distance I would go for the 24. I know there is more power with 24, but is the advantage that much more for accuracy? Are starlings at 100 out of the question with kodiaks?

I can only afford one and right now am strongly leaning to the 18 based off others opinion, but any other input would be appreciated!

Got my 18 today!!! Can’t wait to get it rigged up and ready to wreak havoc. WOK, what kind of valve mod do you have, and do you think it contributes significantly to your accuracy capability?

I have newfound inspiration…. I need to teach my daughters to shoot that well before they get to be teenagers ( I will just use the shotgun) 😈

…and you thought that nobody paid any attention to you ramblings and giant fish stories. 😉 Actually, I was very inpressed with your TSS and your son’s shooting abilities. Outstanding! 😀

Yep that was my son shooting the Talon SS with 16″ barrel. It also has a valve mod and shoots CP’s at 950 fps.

The scope is a Bushnell Legend. He does it lying down off the the bipod or sitting off a camera tripod.

I remembered reading it, just couldn’t remember where! Hopefully I will get to that point sooner or later.

I decided Fukit , I am ordering the 18 tomorrow, I will drive myself nuts if I don’t get it over with! My wife complains I am too obsessive about this stuff 🙄 🙄

Wasn’t that WOK’s gun with his son shooting it?…that was hitting pine cones at some longe distance.

I have close neighbors so I do need to run an ldc for sure, the one I have now (a combo of the washers o rings and scotchbrite) works really well for me. That was kind of my worry- an 18 with ldc is manageable, a 24 with ldc is a broomstick! I remember reading somewhere on here about pinecones at 120 yards with a 16 inch barrel, but I am sure there are a lot of other little tricks that go into a rifle like that aside from just a longer barrel.

Thanks for the input though!

I don’t find my 24″ to long but your are facing a big jump. Consider, the 18 or 24″ will make considerably more noise. Noise will quickly become a factor with either if you have neighbors. Moderators cost more than the barrels and that could hurt. A 24″ barrel can be shortened whereas a 18″ cannot be stretched.

I hope these comments help.

Hi ya Mike! Welcome to the fray. You gotta be hooked if you have been reading the forum for the last year and have a TSS. Great little air rifle for sure. Mine still has it’s 12″ barrell so I can’t speak to which barrell legnth is best…although it seems like a 24″ would be best for 100 yards. Good luck! 😀
