.22 Ammo
I’m new to the forum and love all the great advice but I was surprised there isn’t a section on ammo. So I was wanting to know what you’re go to pellet is for hunting and paper punching. My condors is .22 and not modified so I’ve only had decent accuracy withheavy ppellets.

Onebaddj, what .22 slugs are you using that weigh 45gr-i need some of them.
I have a 22 with 24 inch barrel and lots of extras but when set up for targets around 40 fpe I use the 25.4 jsb also. They are pinpoint accurate out to the end of my 65 yd range I can shoot at the house. Those also do a ton of damage to ground squirrels that are all over the property at the same setting. When I want to laugh Ill unleash full power and the 45 gr slugs for about 82 fpe. When hit the squirrels look like they were drop kicked.
The loud pop is just part of it. Dosnt matter if I hit a squirrel with my Gamo big cat and 8.4 gr JSB’s or the condor with the 45 gr slugs the impact is always a loud pop. Best part is the pop is at the target end so that draws the attention to the impact zone not the shooting spot which give you time to slowly fade into the back ground for a clean get away.
Hi Phoneman, it sounds like your rifle is pushing those pellets with a bit too much haste. Do you have an o’ring under the tophat? If not just snip one through and slide it around the valve stem, then loosen the grubbies in the tophat and turn the tophat clockwise to decrease the gap. Leave a gap small enough that a paper bussiness card will fit in snugly. At that setting you should be roughly in the region of 900fps with 18grs. Accuracy will increase and noise will be less.
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner hogtyd but I really don’t know. Mine isn’t an ss and I bought it back in 2010 . I did a lot of chrono work back then but I found my power wheel was useless maybe 50 fps from one end to the other. So I just settled for using heavy pellets and use a lot of air. It’s about 2 turns off of full power and the 25 gr pellets are sub-sonic but the 18 gr stuff still cracks. Also my moderator is a homemade affair that most certainly helps with accuracy because without it the groups open up quite a bit. I might have to start the process all over again soon though my tank developed a leak and I just got it back from Airforce. They swapped out the tank valve/tophat with a new one and I haven’t had time to play with it yet.
Hard to beat JSB 18 grain or JSB 16 grain for all around shooting.
I wasted a lot of money on trying different pellets – I should have just listened to Tony when he told me this the first time.

At what pressure and power wheel setting are you using on your condor SS? I to have that gun and I can’t get much accuracy with the jsb 25.3 grains. Mine likes the 18.1
Thanks lurker for the reply. I don’t hunt much it’s more pest control. I have a lot a fruit trees and spend my trigger time thinning out the squirrel population. But I find anything under about 18 gr doesn’t do very good. When I’m shooting paper the 25 gr JSB Exact are brutally accurate and they wreck squirrels. Only problem is the noise when they hit,It’s louder than the rifle. I have a homemade can that keeps noise down but my neighbors can’t figure out why the squirrels are dropping dead after they hear a sound like someone’s beating a rug. :biggrinn: .

Fore some time now JSBs have been getting the most ink for accuracy in this forum.
Some time ago Crosman Premieres were the goto pellet probably partly because you could buy box of a thousand at a good savings. I couldn’t get that big a box in my pocket and the weight caused my suspenders to let go 😳
I haven’t hunted for linger than the age of 2 of our younger forum members so they will have to answer that one. But again a consensus is that airgunners must be good shots as the most reliable kills are head shots.

Thanks for the info Nick I’ll have to give that a try. I’ve read about using an o-ring but wasn’t sure how it was done and for squirrel killin 18gr would be plenty.
