Q:

.22 BSA SPORTSMAN

A couple of groups from the sportsman @ 30 yds.

18.1 gr Jumbo Heavy 5 shot group

18.1 gr Jumbo Heavy (one was a flyer)

I have not tried any other pellets and just grabbed a handful of these this morning to see how they would group with a 3000psi fill.

Thanks stickbow, I agree they definitely seem to like the power turned up. Just got a hill pump for Christmas because the dive shop a few miles down the road closed it doors. Looks like I have some work outs in my future for those 3400 fills .

I think BSA’s like their power on the hot side, thats kinda been what i have found, I don’t get the consistency in fps that others have posted but mine is tuned WAY UP…and its a coyote rifle, not paper puncher…I’m impressed with yur offhand shootin!!!! Everybody at AOA has instructed me to fill her way up…even to 3400, but with a Hill pump, 2900-3400 is an eternity, but Holy crap it is crisp and way out there accurate…

Thats more like it!

Decided to turn in hammer spring and leave fill @ 3000psi which brought the fps up to mid 800fps from the previous high 600fps. Grouping tightened up with box positioned @ 41 yrds. Below is a 10 shot group and as with the others is shot from elevated porch railing still using the 18.1 JSB’s. Might try more pressure next as it seems to like the increased velocity. 797 fps was the final reading after 6 chrony shots and the 10 shot group shown below with starting pressure before 10 shot group @ 822 fps. I would have to agree with Jeff and his BSA Lonestar. “I like this rifle”. This is the max distance I have available to work with at home so longer range shooting will have to wait.

10 shot group with laser showing 41 yds and can be covered with a dime.

The weather improved a little today so I went out and shot a couple groups. Still hovering around 10 degrees so I am not staying out to long. Started @ 30 yards and then moved out to 40 yds. The 30 yds shots were what I expected but @ 40 yds a vertical string developed with each round impacting higher than the previous one. Now yesterday I filled the rifle to 3000 psi and put two through the chrony which were in the high 600 fps range then I put the rifle away. After shooting my two groups this morning I put two more rounds through the chrony with the first coming in @ 730 fps and the second @ 738 fps. I removed the stock to expose the hammer adjustment and found it is almost all the way out. I suspect this is why the numbers are coming in so low and it looks like I have some work to. Weather permitting I will work up some shot strings and am thinking of utilize more spring pressure and leave the fill @ 3000 psi or should I raise the psi and leave the spring pressure or both. Looking for a starting point. Thanks

The weather is horrible today so I was not able to shoot but did put two through the chrony. I filled to 3000psi and the first shot was 683 and the second 672 shooting 18.1 gr. Something doesn’t look right as these numbers are way two low. I am using a new Hill Pump and will check the pressure gauge to make sure it is working properly.

Yeah it looks like you need to try a higher fill pressure and find the bell curve or back the adjusting screw out some. With an 11 fps spread for two shots it looks like it is completly off of the curve and on its way down.

Nice Rifle guy…yur gonna love it…I have the Lonestar with the 23,5″ barrel and it SCREEMS kodiaks at 1000fps for the first 5 or so, my adjuster is screwed all the way IN…alot less shots but huge power…Yours is sweet…nice groups…amazing the “flyer” is just outside of the group…

Sweet Sportsman you got there—how fast are you shooting those JSB 18 grainers?—On my Sportsman Ive got the adjusting screw pretty much turned all the way out (backed off) from 3400 psi string usually starts off around 930 up thru 970 and back down to 930. The Kodiaks are ever so slightly slower. My first impression of the Monsters in my Sportsman was promising-just seem to use too much air to push them as fast as I would like- they seem to stay in the mid 800s with the power turned way down. I have some posts here with pics of groups shot with the 18s, 16s, Kodiaks and the 25 Monsters—way earlier posts on shot strings as well. GO BSA.

I have not shot through the chrony yet but will do so tomorrow and post the speed.

Thanks Jeff. I am going to try the Kodiaks and Monsters beyond 50 yds and see what happens.

The Monsters have shot good for me but not the best and I think that is because I am shooting them a little slow for long range accuracy.(790fps) Do you have a chrony or know how fast your rifle is shooting?

Thanks Jeff. I am going to try the Kodiaks and Monsters beyond 50 yds and see what happens.

Looking good! It will probably hold those groups another 10-20yards out.

lookin good
