I got my barrel blank from a guy here in town who used tp be a gunsmith but has since retired and he hooked me up with the blank at his cost which was $50….I would stick with a .22lr barrel since they slug out at .22-.217 depending on the manufacturer…but I could be wrong since I have been before…one more thing is that you will most likely be shooting slower using the lr barrel since their is more rifling engaged in the pellet or slug…

that is what I am interested in is getting a match .223 barrel and try it. I think it is very doable even keeping things subsonic with the heavy hammer set of the 25cal.

I am of the opinion that a hyper velocity “AG” is a doable concept but folks will need to think far outside the normal corners of the box to do it.
The trick will be to apply a modification of the operational principles of Light Gas Gun technology using instead of a combustible explosion, a high volume release of extremely high pressure air to compress the Hydrogen or Helium transfer stage. Remember we are not looking for the normal target velocities of conventional Light Gas Guns, in my case target velocity would be no more than 3000FPS
anyways air gunners box their brains around certain holy grail equations that are not written in tablets of stone if you apply proven technologies to resolve the task at hand
Is this practical?
maybe yes, maybe no
likely the resultant weapon would be rather massive, no smaller than an RPG but it should be doable.
Heres a NASA cartoon of LGG operation and yes numerous examples of LGGs have been built just none using HPA to compress the light gas “spring”:

i am just intrested in what you did before i tried it, i was looking at barrel blanks and was seeing them as cheap as 78 bucks but they were about 1 inch in diamater where did you get your barrel, i just want to stay with 22 so i can shoot pellets when in the backyard and go to slugs when i want with the same barrel witch sounds like it can be done if you shoot pellets with yours and getting good results. and you did not hijack the thread you guys are talking about what i want i love to talk about GUNS 😀

Ed- sorry for hijacking your thread..

MM- I’ve managed to get past that need for extreme speed so I’m thinking I’m gonna stick with the setup I’ve got….she’s fast enough and still accurate..it was an idea I had and wanted to give it a go so that’s where it will most likely stay..

Hey Subs,

Helium is a bad choice…It’s such a small molecule that you’ll have leaking from everywhere. Not sure that it can flow any faster, in fact, it may be slower because it’s less dense.

I’d go nitrogen if I wanted to replace air. But not sure that you will get any velocity benefits, air is 78% nitrogen. Nitrogen is just more readily available at high pressure, and a lot of people have access to it instead of air. It’s also less affected by temperature, but air is not that bad.

You’re going to have to go springer if you want those velocities…not that there is anything wrong with springers.

Jim

MM-

im just a simple machinist but that did cross my mind as to being a reason why i couldn’t hit my mark (which was probibly way too high) but none of the imagineeres at work could tell me how fast the air would or could flow which of course is the limiting factor that we all have to work with….now im starting to think about trying helium insted of air given that it expands faster and is still safe (at least as far as i know) for use in our guns but i still need to do more homework before i head down that road if i do…im quite happy with how my gun is running now so im not too shure im gonna do it…

Hey Subs,

I’m not sure you can get 1500fps out of a precharged rifle. I thought the max speed of a flowing gas is the speed of sound in that gas or around 1130fps at sea level.

Springers can do it because of the piston, but that’s a whole nother animal.

Jim

ps: maybe you could try with water as the speed is 8x as fast…lol.

i did try the NAA cast .22 bullets and they hit like a hammer but i just couldn’t get the fps I was looking for….my goal like many who tried and failed before me was 1200+fps with 3/4″ groups at 50yrds……i could getr the groups but the fit in the barrel was too tight to allow the fps i was looking to get…. 👿 but on a higher note i can sling the kodiaks at 1080fps and get 1″ groups at 50yrds using the bipod…

did you try any molds for bullets for rimfire or center fire rounds?

That was me…..the biggest change was that in accuracy….so far the only pellet that I can not get to group are the RWS Super H Points every thing else that I have tried has given 1″ groups or better at 30yrds….the down side is that my fps are slower than what they would be with a standard L.W. Barrel….so would I do it again? Only if I get the same deal on the match grade blank again…
