Q:

.22cal marlin 60 gets a grouse

Me and a good airgun buddy had a chance to go to a 1200 acre deer club this weekend. About 2 1/2 hours from NYC in the catskills we had our powderburners and our calls , camo and beer we where on a mission to call in some yotes. We spent most of the first morning scouting and set up a few stands with no luck . We covered alot of ground and the 2 inches of fresh snow and cold temps made it real fun . On 3 occasions we found good tracks of dogs and deer track was everywhere from overnight all fresh . in total we set up 6 stands and came up empty handed . So sunday morning after setting up 3 more stands with no dogs my friend who was hunting with a shotgun said lets shake up the hemlocks for some grouse we saw some tracks a figured we could kick some up . Since only had my .22 i stayed back and hope i could get a shot by luck . And sure as shit luck came my way after pushing through a second group of 40 ft hemlocks 2 birds jumped up behind my friend right into some trees about 75 ft from where i was standing , giving me a clear shot . I braced on a small tree put the crosshairs on it’s neck and squeezed off a round . Bird down neck snapped in half i did lose a very small section of breast meat . The cold weather {11 degrees F} my gun jammed as the other bird sat there i tried to re chamber a round but it was to late the second one flew off or i had a chance at a double . Here’s my bird and myself with the marlin 60

Good shooting Knot! 😯

Always good to seen good game taken and to see another Marlin 60 in use. I love those guns. Grew up shooting my Uncles and it don’t seem like them things changed at all.

gotta love a good ol ruffed grouse! I like to boil a bit of pine needles in water first then boil a few strips of bacon in the water and toss in the grouse in the pan with some onions and taters , salt, pepper, garlic and bake until done mmmmm nice Wild taste with a hint of pine and is very tasty

sure dose look like a quail on the juice, but it tastes all the same like chicken .It cooked up nice with salt and pepper a little rosemary and potatos topped with onions and mushrooms on the side

Is that like a quail on steroids?

“Grouse” around here means to complain a lot.

Regards,

HOot
