Haha, I know what you mean about letting other people shoot it syn. I would always make them dry fire it first. Mine was about as light as you could get it with the lightest spring, so between 1.5 and 2oz. You definitely don’t want to come anywhere close to it before you are on target. I wouldn’t put my finger in the guard until I was pointed where I wanted to be. Just a touch and it would fire.
Several people were surprised that the safety worked. They figured it wouldn’t being set that light. But when I set it I banged the rifle around and played with it to make sure it absolutely would not go off without pulling the trigger.
That 300 RUM trigger I did the same way. When it came to me you needed to hook a tow line up to a truck to pull the trigger it was so heavy. I got it much much lighter and crisper. If I had kept it I probably would have put a JEWELL trigger in it as well.
Glad to hear you are enjoying it. 😀 As for letting friends shoot your guns, if you REALLY want to have some fun, get a 200g bullet loaded hot into that 300 RUM and let them fire it. Even better tell them you can’t put it on the bench and make them stand up. I did it a few times and it’s usually pretty hysterical. The more you can do to hide how much it’s going to hurt the better, put the bullet in without them seeing it well and such. When they shoot it they pee a little. 😆 They will probably laugh when the world stops spinning around them. 😛 When I bought that thing it had a solid rubber recoil pad on it. I shot it once with the other pad and thought it dislocated my shoulder. The one on there now takes a lot of the bite out.
I think that rifle only gave one person I know stitches. A couple that probably should have gotten them, and 5 or so bloody foreheads. I think it also almost broke my brother’s nose (he flinched away) As long as you don’t flinch and fire it like you should, it’s really not bad. 😀

I’d like to transition to the 6.5×47 Lapua round for a dedicated BR rifle. The taxman just cleaned me out so it may be a few months before I can even think about a new race gun built from scratch.
Nice thing with the 223 is it’s under 25 grains of powder per round. The 6.5×47 is nearly twice that… 😯 I started with Winchester 748 and wasn’t using a magnum primer, solved that. Then my technique and rest setup needed work. Working on that… Had some bullet to lands issues, got the stuff to fix that…
I expect huge leaps in accuracy. My best group with a good rest, poor seat depth and wrong primers is just under 1/2″ a 100 yards with a slight wind (the range is always windy).
I picked up some Hogdon powder recently for the non-magnum primers I have… That should yield some excellent results as well. Only thing is the ball selection with the one in twelve twist is not the best, Sierra makes one of the only bt rounds under 65 grains…
It sure puts holes exactly where you point it!!! That trigger can scare the shit out of you. I had my friend fire a few groups. I said “The trigger is light.” He says, “No problem, I like light triggers.” He grabs a round and goes to put it in the chamber. “No, wait.” I say and fish the round out of the action. “Dry fire it, and be careful not to fire it with your thumb when you close the bolt…” I smile, I know he doesn’t get it… “It didn’t cycle.” He says… 😆 😆 😆 😆 “Holy crap!!!” He finally gasps, he was very impressed with the whole setup. 😉
I actually need to swap out the trigger springs. I think I have it as heavy as you can get it with the lightest spring. I need just a little creep, right now I thing it’s got negative creep. I don’t even touch the fucking thing until I am ready to fire, then I touch it slightly and just a wee bit more and “BANG!”. 😯
It’s THE go to precision rifle in the vault. 😉 😎
Oh heck I haven’t fired my savage 223 in years. I make my own loads and have all the written down, can’t recall off the bat but it shoots holes like a 3 leaf clover on 100 yards.
It’s consistent.
I shoot around the house and don’t get to the range anymore .
Been planning on going.
Can’t make that much noise around here too close to cattle and other animals.
So i use my Airguns, Heck man I have as much fun at 25 and 45 yards here in the yard as i do at the range making big booms LMBO.
Heck it’s all fun. I love my guns, I have 3 vaults full, and about 15000 rounds of ammo, so I can really target shoot and get rid of pesky birds that like to shit on my hood and keep me cleaning it off. 😛
Listen you guys keep making these things and etting them better, and this old guy will keep shooting them, It keeps me young. 😀

Give it a shot at 50 yards… My 10/22 USST, w/SS .960 barrel can’t shoot any hp ammo at all. It will stack SK Standard ammo on top of itself all day at 50 yards though… Ain’t it funny how many different results come from the 10/22 with the same ammo…
I have tried too many to list (and have tons of useless to me ammo). Eley yellow and SK Std. work best in the mid price range…
I almost went and ordered some of the top stuff the guy recommended but the rifle is so different than what I have I decided to stick with what I own. After I discovered reloading, blackpowder pistols and converted my TalonSS to a TalonDor 25 cal the 22LR round has basically become a waste of my time… It was a great starter target rifle but I have moved on so to speak…
I take my friends out and give them the crappy ammo and easily outshoot them. 😆 Once they are all worked up I let them shoot the good stuff, at that point it doesn’t matter. Works every time… 😆

In My Rugger 1022 with the green mountain barrel, and in My Oregon arms Chipmunk 22 rifles, the best ammo Ive found is the federal high powered 36 grain hollow point sold in Bulk boxes at wallmart.
Shooting off of a bench with a bi pod I get one hole groups at 25 yards with a 3X9 scope bushnell.
Best bang for the buck, I hold it about 1/3rd down on the cross hair at 100 yards and I don’t miss a clay pigeon.
That’s on a calm day, never tried it in a good wind.
No other ammo that Ive tried not even expensive match ammo will do the one hole at 25 like the federal will.
I have even went to Conover North Carolina at a popular gun dealer down there to find match ammo that might beet the Federal, but not yet.
I have about 20 different brands from wildcat to federal match to the best match they make.
Might be different in other guns, but in my green Mountain barrel and Oregon arms barrel, it’s federal High Power Bulk. 😀
I buy relatively expensive ammo for my 10/22 but it’s nothing like that! It doesn’t like the Eley stuff very much… I tried about 6 different kinds and settled on SK/Wolf, it’s too much trouble for 0.1″…
I agree it’s more of a plinking around for fun type of round. Even more so in a semi-auto format…
And I can’t reload it. 👿 😆
Some of that ammo defeats the purpose of having a .22lr, at least to me it does. Some people have a .22lr as true target gun. Mine is for fun, and trigger practice.
Eley Tenex ammo is $25 for a box of 50. That’s just crazy!

Good article indeed. To me, shooting is about accuracy, regardless of the tool used. If I just want to make noise, I’ll just play my drums in the garage 😉
My plain Jane .22LR Savage topped off with Burris Timberline produces 1/4″ at 50 yards for 3 shots on a good day and when I am in the “zone.” Best ammo is German Wolf Match.
It will nail a rabbit size animal out to 150 yards when conditions are good.
