Q:

24" Barrel Questions

Hello, Ive been a long time lurker on the forum and have gotten TONS of great info from all guys that post here. So thanks to all for that. Ive had my Talon SS .177 for about 6 months now and LOVE it. Its my second PCP, first being a Marauder, and since getting it Im a little dissapointed in my MRod. 😐 This thing is so accurate, I figured the groups I was getting with the MRod were just me, nope, I can put em through the same hole till I get board with the Talon. So since I have a gun that is such a great shooter I’d just leave it alone and be happy, right? 😆 So I ordered a 24″ .177 barrel thinking I could turn the power down, get more shots from a fill, and still have the same velocity. Well I got the barrel and put it in and ran into my first problem, the barrel bushings on the new one didnt line up as well in the frame as the stock barrel. They were close, but as you put the grub screws in you could feel the resistance of them cause they were off center in the bushings. I decided to first flip the bushings around but leave them in the same position on the barrel as far as which one was on the front and rear. Still no better so I swapped them front and rear, and facing both ways like that. Never got it as good as my stock barrel. I was able to install it, but they just didnt go in as smooth as the stock one. Finally time to shoot. Went out and was happy that I was still on paper without scope adjustments so I kept my aim point the same and kept shooting. The more I shot the more disappointed I got, It was just throwing them around in about a 4 inch circle, nothing like my 12″ barrel. I told myself, just keep shooting, maybe it just needs some pellets put through it to straighten out. Even though my 12″ was dead accurate from shot #1. Shot about 50- 60 pellets through it, then try a few different ones, no luck. So at this point I wanted a control, so I put my stock barrel back in, took aim at my 100 yrd coke can, and, Tink! This was last weekend, since then I went ahead and cleaned the 24″ and put it back in, I decided to give it one more try this weekend after cleaning it, and if its the same its going back to PA.

Has anyone else had problems like this. I looked at the crown and it looks fine, though it could have a problem not visible to the naked eye. Maybe I just got a bad barrel? Should I send it back and try another one, or just return it and be happy with my 12″

Also I got a Condor shroud from Tony to use with the 24″. Its one of the 14″ shrouds he calls a Gen V. Really nice shroud, and buying from him was great, only person I ever ordered from that called me while he was filling out the shipping info, just to be sure it was right!

Thanks All

My high flow valve was adjusted to run at 1800 PSI. It did not take much to fill that up. I am about to rebuild it and maybe I will set it higher this time. Then again, maybe not.

Thanks ELDY, I was really happy it worked so good with 2000psi, I have a luxfer 106 ci tank and it holds 4350psi. I used to go shooting 3 times then I’d have to fill it, now should get a few more trips in. I was planning on trying to send you a message to ask if you were gonna have any more .30 cal kits for the JSB .30 pellets. I been interested for a bit now, but have noticed your mainly doing .35-.45 now.

Just got back from shooting, got this thing all figured out. Gun WAS shooting too fast, about 1100 fps. I shot it last time at Power setting 8. I dropped it down to 0 and got better accuracy results but still a wide fps spread. Turns out I was filling way to high also, filled to 3000 like with my 12″ barrel the first time. After some experimenting I found a 2000 psi fill pressure works great for the gun. Getting around 950 fps, and 40+ shots. The accuracy is just as good as my 12″ barrel, and I will get many more fills from my tank, so I’m really happy with the swap. Also the Talon Tunes shroud is very quiet, with these settings its only a hair louder than my marauder. It is also shooting alot of pellets very well.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I’m going to go back out tomorrow afternoon and will take some pics of the gun and the place I’ve got to shoot, I’m lucky enough to have grown up on some property in a rural area and we’ve got a nice setup out there for hanging out and shooting on the weekends.

My TSS had a 24″ .177 HW barrel on it when I got it. It also had a high flow valve. It would sling 16 grain Eun Jins out of it at 1140 FPS! Couldn’t hit anything, but it made an impressive crack.

You probably need to slow that puppy down. As you said, the longer barrel is more efficient than the short barrel. Stick an o-ring behind the top hat and see what that does.

Yea like I said in OP I tried some different ones, didnt say which ones. My stock barrel likes Exact Heavys so I shot those first and kept shooting them trying to run some through it. Then I tried 8.4 grain Exacts, Premier lites and heavys, Barracuda match 4.52 head, Kodiak copper, Falcons, and Superdomes. Im hoping it was just shooting to hot to group, we will see tomorrow.

Also I just found out the NRA annual meeting is in town here in Indy, its like a mini shot show, and I guess Pyramyd has a booth there with some product, and they have an airgun range with guns to try. I think im going to have to go there sometime this weekend. Which day to shoot, which day for the show, decisions decisions.

Maybe the different barrel likes different pellets too?

Thanks for the reply, yea I thought about the velocity while at work today. I didnt have my cronograph with me the day I was shooting, I should have. Im going tomorrow to try it again and I will take it with me. I bet it was over 1000 fps for sure, way to fast. I did clean the barrel this week to try it again, but as many pellets as I shot through it I would not think thats it. The crown looks fine, concentric and even. I’m hoping your right about it shooting too fast to be accurate. I just want to figure it out quick before its too late to send it back if theres a problem with it.

How was the velocity with the 24″ bbl? It could very well be Too high for the .177 to be accurate. Moving the bushings for proper alignment should be no problem.

Did you check the barel crown on the .117 and give the barrel a really good cleaning? New barrels can be a little rough sometimes. Mostly need cleaning from factory gunk.
