Q:

25 Cal Dirty Barrel And Accuracy

It looks like I need to clean my barrel about every 10 mags or less. I was shooting today and the accuracy fell apart. I pulled a patch wet with Balistol and yup it was dirty, but what I’m finding every time I clean is a lot of lead flakes on the first patch. I’m not sure why and I’m hoping one of Ernest’s tune ups with resolve most of that issue. The patch pulls kind of rough for the first 6-8 inches and then it smooth out quite a bit. After I’ve pulled about 3 wetted patches I finish up with probably four dry ones. Your can see a few of the lead flakes in the photo attached but with the naked eye there is quite a bit more. I’ve never seen this much lead on any other of my guns. Anyone shooting the 25cal seeing this?

Kings @ 918 fps, my bet it will be driving finish nails there!

Gracklesmacker, I think you may have a defective barrel. Look inside your barrel starting from the muzzle and you may be really shocked. You need to use some kind of a strong light source – your mobile phone LED should be enough.

From what I see it looks shiny and smooth all the way down. Some others are seeing the same thing on the first patch so I think I just need to pull a couple of patches through it ever six or seven mags. It shoots too good to have a defective barrel :smilen: I’m hoping for even better accuracy after I get a tune from Ernest. Hopefully I’ll get some nice weather over the next few days to try some different velocities. The lowest I’ve gone so far has been about 940. I’m going to work my way down toward 900, weather permitting and see if I can see any noticeable difference.

My 30 cal definitely needs cleaning sooner per shot than the smaller calibers.

Thanks for the replies guys. I haven’t seen any short term ill effect on accuracy after cleaning the gun. After a couple of shots it seems to be back to normal.

The bigger the caliber, the bigger the area a pellet has contact with the bore. This equals faster “fouling” on bigger calibers.
Polishing the barrel is recommended, if for nothing else then a polished barrel will take longer to get dirty thus increased time between clean-up sessions.
Those flakes probably come from the choke area. Mine did that as well – both .25`s.

I would get a little bit of lead on first pull but that’s about it. My barrels are pretty smooth and have a nice equal pull through . If its rough at the start then you should look into polishing the barrel. The 25 needs more cleaning than my 22 but that’s pretty much a known fact already.
