.25 STD R3M + NC Shroud/LDC
Finally got my Neil Clague shroud today. First off, I like to mention that I chose a path that not too many Matador owners have taken and that is going with the slide on shroud rather than the screw on shroud like the OEM. Lots of questions regarding the nut in the baffle torquing the barrel straight.
The shroud came in a tube package which I thought was neat. I was expecting it to be in a box like all my other packages I’ve received.
My biggest concern after I placed the order is that did I measure the barrel diameter correctly. I had to buy a caliper to measure it. I’ve never used one before and it seems like every time I measured it would give me a different number. But I ended up giving Neil .4820 inches. To my surprise, it fit perfectly.
He also replicated the lip that goes inside the breech.
Two grub screws on the side in the rear does an amazing job securing the shroud onto the barrel. After I tightened them, you can see that the shroud is still free floating like the OEM. I tugged on it and it does not move.
The OEM shroud is 13 inches long. NC shroud minus the LDC is a little less than 13.25 inches.
The LDC is 6 inches long and make the OAL of the gun from butt to tip of LDC 35.25 inches.
When I push the shroud down, it does touch the air tube, also when I nudge the barrel left to right. It moves just a tiny bit. Just to verify, I took off NC shroud and LDC and put on the OEM. The OEM also touches the air tube when pressed down even a little. I can also nudge the shroud left and right just like NC’s. So in conclusion, this method is just as sturdy as the screw on shroud. I was able to zero the scope very quickly at 30 yds. I was out and about most of the day today and only had about an hr to play with it before it got dark.
When I shot the gun outside, my parents and wife said it wasn’t loud at all. Sounded like a regular pump bb gun they said. To me though, it has a very loud crack almost high pitch. SECoda told me it is most likely the Hammer/Breech noise. Please remember this is my first PCP and although I read so many times that the hammer slap is very loud, I just didn’t expect it to be this loud 😯 But to people standing about 20 feet away, it wasn’t loud to them.
Before I called it a day today, I recorded a quick sound test on my iphone. I know it’s not the best way of recording sound but I threw the phone about 3 feet from where I was crouching down to shoot. Please excuse the amateur filming. I’ll do more testing tomorrow, with and without the LDC.
The shot comes at the 10 sec mark. The impact noise is a lot louder than the gun.

No vent holes in the CF shroud.
Are there vent holes at the end of the shroud like on the original that you enlarged or was that not an option?

Nice shroud Donny. So with this setup the barrel is no longer stretched like stock setup? I wonder how would it affect accuracy.
Thanks Bleece, and no you and Hoot are correct, I have to move that target to the left side of the fence. Although I have safety protocols with my family when I shoot, you just never know. Will move it tomorrow 🙂
Also, Donny, you might want to consider that the gun sound is going to be magnified when you’re enclosed by many
hard flat surfaces– the gate behind you, the fence on the left, the wall of the house on the right. The gun will
sound immediately quieter when shooting from a less walled in area.
Also, just wondering.: The picture of your target alley (which is what I assumed for the above)… that blind spot
of the back corner of your house?… Looks a little scary. You’ve ensured that in no way will anybody accidentally, unknowingly,
innocently, or without you seeing them first, walk into a pellet? I’m overcautious maybe.

its a beauty, if you want to change the tone to a lower note–put vent on the rear. they say don’t drill holes on CF–did it anyway on two of my CF shroud. just have to melt seal the holes.

Farting noise? It was probably my vagina as I was standing back up.
I hear a little hammer noise and a nice pfffft from the muzzle on the recording. What is that farting noise at the end. 😛
Donny, no matter what you do it will sound loud to the shooter because your ear is directly over the hammer strike but this doesn’t translate being loud to your neighbors, I’m sure your set up is quitter than before. As a test shoot your edgun from an extend position as if it were a conventional rifle and you will quickly understand just how quite it really is. Enjoy, Mike

The Edgun is your first pcp? Man, you know how to get started! Loudness is often hard for the shooter, who has his/her head against the gun, to determine. You’ll hear every ting, slap and pop. Thanks for posting the NC setup; good-looking moderator. BB gun loud is nothing to worry about. The impact will likely be greater. My R3M long, .25 is quiet enough for me. But, folks like Zombie Hoot, looking to harvest brains, want great stealth. He has been known to pad pellet tips with marshmallows to lessen the impact noise. He will be very interested in the NC shroud.
Bottom line: is it quieter than the original? If so, progress has been made. (In addition to aesthetics.)

Mine does not have the lip which fits into the spacer as shown on your pic:
Mine just butts up against the spacer/scope rail. As a consequence, there is a tiny bit of up and down play because the barrel o.d. slightly smaller than the hole in the spacer. Even after screwing on the shroud very tightly. Funny thing is that accuracy in not affected at all. However, I may notice an effect at much longer distances. I don’t know for sure unless I test it.
I was thinking of possibly adding a shim to make up for the difference. It would have to be a thin shim since the gap is minor. I can start with a piece of from an aluminum can and sand the piece down for a perfect fit. I will do this if I notice a difference when shooting. For now, I’m good with it.
