Q:

250 or 257 Haley, which do I have

I have a Haley rifle that I bought used at Whiteside’s estate auction. I always thought it was .25 caliber, because the tag said “Haley 25”. I have been using beeman kodiak .25 caliber pellets in it and they seat so easily, much easier than a .25 condor that I have. I never though much of it until I read the talk here about .257. I then reviewed Haley’s site and saw that the 250 was not meant for pellets and it looks just like the 257. Could what I have be .257 and how can I tell? I guess I need to push a slug through the barrel and measure it?

This is also driven by my desire to get a mold and start casting bullets for this rifle.

Lyman 257420 Mold arrived yesterday. Hope to get some time to work on it in the next few weeks, but I doubt it.

NOE has a bunch more 80 gr FP molds in stock.

IF i were you, i would be all over the NOE molds. Check my 257 page in “OTHER GUNS” to see the noe link

Can’t wait to see your progress with the 257

Barrel arrived today. I saw the box over lunch, but did not get a chance to open it. Hopefully I will get started on the machining tonight.

Lyman 257420 mold on order. It seemed to be out of stock everywhere so it is on backorder from Midway. Should be here end of august…..I hate the wait. Anyone have suggestions on other molds to try?

It looks like if the transfer port is further back than 1/2 inch. The barrel will be threaded 1/2 inch to screw into breech. The current barrel part that forms the loading tray will be made a separate piece (bored out to 0.260) and attached to the breech. It will include the transfer port. You can see it in the breech pictures above (and here).

Pictures will be posted as progress is made.

The red outline shows where the barrel is cut to also form the loading tray.

what are you going to do with the transfer port?
I understand that the 257 Halley has it in a different place

TJ’s 30″ .257 1-14 twist on order to replace/supplement this barrel. I will do all the machine work on it myself when it arrive (hopefully next week). The plan is to replace the barrel attachment with screw in barrels, like roach’s gun, 1/2-20 threads and a modified breech. The front end will be a figure 8 piece that clamp bolts to the tube and barrel (no set screws).

Pics will be posted as progress is made.

LW barrel equals a regular ole 250 cal PELLET shooter. From what I read, some of the LW barrels might run about .253 groove diameter too. Definitely STOP and slug your bore just to make sure of the true inner diameter

Nice looking gun!

Dam nice stock!,

Martin,

My lower is 1.132×7.25 the air tube is 23 inches not counting caps and the upper is .811×8.25. My cocking knob is on the right side and a longer stroke 2.33.

So no they are different beasts.

Metal around hammer bolt is ~0.100.

I could be wrong but it looks to be a qb. I don’t recall jacks receiver to be dovetailed and the thickness around the hammer bolt looks very thin. Also the fill pressure and shot count sounds like a qb. I get 3 shots at 3800psi.

AirTube OD is 1.125 and 19 inches long to seam where airtube meets valve tube.
Barrel OD is 0.635 and 23.75 inches long. (I assume it is the Walther 25 caliber airrifle barrel that comes 0.630 x 23.8 inches long).

Close ups pictures of the breech can be seen here.

Martin,

PM sent.

I found some old data that says it is 940 fps for 15 shots between 2800 psi and 1800 psi with Beeman Kodiaks for a little over 60 ft-lbs. Data does not give ES or min/max speeds.
